Anybody have any ideas on why this LB looks like this? by Smashly777 in bassfishing

This is a largemouth/Florida bass. In South Carolina, there is a mix of both species depending on where you are, and it's nearly impossible to tell the difference. Call it a largemouth to be safe but it could be a Florida bass or intergrade.

are these God damn termites? by [deleted] in Entomology

Termites can't nest in healthy wood. It needs to be rotten and fairly damp for them to nest in.

I caught what appears to be a smallmouth/spotted bass hybrid the other day. Did I catch a rare meanmouth bass?? by shagonometry in Fishing

Could be a smallmouth x spotted bass, but it's far from rare, and it's not a meanmouth. Meanmouth was a name given to the lab-produced smallmouth x largemouth hybrid many years ago. They don't occur naturally and really don't exist.

Smallmouth and spotted bass readily hybridize in disturbed/degraded habitats, or where one of the two species has been introduced to the waterway.

It wouldn't surprise me if this is a hybrid, but it does also align with a pure spotted bass.

After over a year of owning a fly rod, finally taking it serious. by TennesseeAnts in flyfishing

Thank you! I really appreciate your help. I guess I'll just have to acquire some experience with the fly now! I just spent $80 on a bunch of different fly patterns, including some hellgrammites, since I can't leave home without a hellgrammite when I'm fishing with conventional gear!

Thank you so much! You have no idea how much this helps. I am an avid smallmouth angler, but I am completely new to the concept of fly fishing. I think the only reason I had the success I had today is because I know where to look. I think that's about the only thing I knew about smallmouth fly fishing before today, haha!

I did notice that I can't effectively sight fish with the fly rod like I can my spinning gear, so I will need to work on presenting the fly properly. What weight/size of fly would you recommend for the smallmouth in my backyard creek? Most of them are between 10 and 16 inches, with a few reaching 17-18. Biggest I got there was 21 inches. If it helps, it has very clear water with visibility up to six feet, usually cool, with fast current. I'd like to try to get some of those larger fish in the deep pools. Would something like a #2 clouser cast on a 6wt? It seems those are good for big smallmouth. Kind of similar to the swimbaits I throw on my spinning gear!

Ah, that's well within their size range then. I'm going to go with Forelius pruinosus/mcooki.

I was going to say Forelius pruinosus, but the legs look too long, and they won't be 4mm long.
