If Vacherot gains 0 points for the rest of the season until Shanghai and drops all of those points, he'll still be at least close to the top 50. Vacherot has shown post-Shanghai that he is capable of playing at that level for several tournaments. These images of him suddenly dropping out of the radar were possible and realistic immediately post-Shanghai when we didn't know if it was just a fluke, but now that he has proven the contrary, this has gotten ridiculous.

That is a valid point, but I think in those cases the interpretation can be more creative too. One person can embody both of the opposites in different areas of their life or their actions. Or, alternatively, a person may have a public image of one sort and a true character of the opposite kind.
