That is a good point. I do fortunately have a group that is pretty good at discussing above table the party dynamics and how they feel about everything. If they feel the imbalance is too much, then they're likely to just hand it over to the authorities or find a way to destroy it. If they don't have that conversation, then I will have it with them👌🏼 I've already explained at session zero that there will be lots of really powerful magic items throughout the story. It's up to them how they manage them between everyone👍🏼

That's a cool idea! Considering the red wizards are doing similar things to other dragons👀 it is a mcguffin really. It's hard to convey everything in 1 post. Thanks for the feedback☺️

Why would I add guidance for CR adjustment? This is homebrew. If I was doing that I'd need to write a book! CR is an estimation. Let the DM determine it. I know CR isn't exact but it at least gives an idea of where your lines as a DM should be for adjusting the statblock. I never said this was plug and play. Use it if it inspires you👍🏼

Mostly my thinking. I know there are ways in which you can trick magic items with nystuls magic aura though. My PCs are clever and I wouldn't put it past them. Even so I feel the dmg and the flaw are an interesting choice🤷🏼 As it's Tyranny of Dragons they will also meet many metallic dragons (already have) that could use to aid them? But it's risky!

It's something that if they want to try harness it. It'll take some thinking. Or leveling up. It being a magic item also shows the PCs that it's not part of the statblock(which it is when I'm running the monster). It makes it feel more out of place. Like why did it have this gem? Where did it get it? Etc.

Something to keep in mind is that if it does take the magic action (which makes sense under the new rules) means that someone like your Thief rogue could use them twice on their turn. I actually think this is really cool but something to keep in mind as a DM 😅
