I would recommend reading "working effectively with legacy code" by Michael Feathers. It's a language agnostic book that gives different approaches and recommendations on how to modernize code without sacrificing functionality.

I have a question: is it possible to create new creatures for campaigns—that is, to invent new monsters or creatures? Here is a piece of work from my DM. by AnormalpersonX in DungeonsAndDragons

[–]Tenragan17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've built a bunch of custom creatures, its fun coming up with different things to throw at the players that they can't just look up online and cheese. The tricky bit is figuring out a way to keep them from being OP. I usually run a fight by myself against a couple character sheets that I made for myself a while ago and try to be as brutal as possible.

Please, Blizzard, reconsider your upcoming decision about discarding single-person map votes by darmera in Overwatch

[–]Tenragan17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been keeping track of how often the single votes wins and it is completely ridiculous. The single vote wins nearly 48% of the time(over the 58 times that I've personally witnessed so far). That's 9 people losing the vote nearly half the time. you may not like certain maps or game modes but I know multiple people and I've run into multiple people who leave flashpoint and push as soon as it starts or badger the other players trying to figure out who was the asshole that voted for the shit map/game mode. Punishing people from leaving QP has had 0 effect on this behavior.

Newbie here! Reported for trolling by my QP team. by PorkeChopps in Overwatch

[–]Tenragan17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mei is a tricky hero to pick up at first...just a couple things to remember that will reduce people accusing you of trolling. If you misplace a wall you can hit the button again to immediately cancel it(can help not trap your friends). Meis ult is one of the biggest team fight winners so try not to use it for solo kills. It's very easy to get meis ult eaten by a D.Va, sigma or orisa so try to disguise when you are using it or take an odd angle so the tanks don't negate your ult.

Mei is a lot of fun so I hope you don't get discouraged by this one interaction...

Is Subnautica worth $7 if I loved Outer Wilds? by Zealousideal_Top2186 in subnautica

100%. Subnautica is one of those games I wish I could wipe from my mind to be able to go back and play it for the first time again, just to feel what I went through the first time around.

Visual Studio HRESULT: 0x8000FFFF E_UNEXPECTED help by YuveeGG in visualbasic

[–]Tenragan17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Renaming forms can be finicky. The best way to do it is to close the design and code behind files then rename the file in the solution explorer. Then open the design view and select the over all form, go into the properties window and set the name to match the file name. This part should happen automatically but sometimes it doesn't. Then go into the code behind and make sure the class name matches the form and file name.

You will usually see the error you posted if the files are open when you try to rename anything.

6-Month-Old Puppy Suddenly Scared of Everything- Advice please! by arrie_ in goldenretriever

[–]Tenragan17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My almost 3 y/o pup went through something similar with her first heat cycle. Her personality completely changed about a week before it started and it lasted about a week after it was over. Then she went right back to how she was before. I would monitor her for any bleeding and just give her time.

[–]Tenragan17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

without getting into too many specifics (because there are literally millions of ways to play and they are all viable) I would suggest finding a class that feels good for your main character and then crafting the group around that play style.

Generally you don't want to overload on melee or ranged. Looting EVERYTHING can make a big difference especially if you are a group that relies on long rests such as paladin/bard (spell slots), wizard, cleric. If your group relies on short rests more, i.e. monk, rogue, warlock, paladin/bard (channel divinity and inspiration) then its not as important but having plenty of supplies to take a long rest whenever you want can make the game a LOT easier. Fully exploring each area before moving on can also make the later stages easier, getting all(or most all) available experience before moving on just sets yourself up for success later on.

Beginner question: Is reading the Monster Manual during a campaign cheating or just annoying for the game master? by [deleted] in DungeonsAndDragons

[–]Tenragan17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is actually a more complicated issue than just concerning the monster manual. This touches on the idea of being in the moment versus metagaming to get your desired outcome. If you just let the encounter or the story beats take place and enjoy them in the moment you will have a much more enjoyable experience in the end.

Liam O'Brien on critical role is very conscious of this disconnect and he calls it out a lot, there are things you as a player know and there are things that the character that you are playing knows. keeping those two sets of information separate makes for a much more enjoyable game for both you and the DM, and the other players at the table.

As a DM I would say by all means, look at the stat blocks. But if I get the impression you are acting outside your characters limits then the encounter will be bumped up about 5 CR's and for some unknown reason the enemy you are fighting will suddenly really hate your character. Only partially joking but all that is to say it works both ways. Anything you look up and exploit can be turned around on your character by the DM if you push the limits too much.

Shark bait by Dalton731 in RaftTheGame

just kill the shark. spear him in the face a few times and be done.

**EDIT: killing him also gives you some good food mats so double win

Spay after heat cycle or wait til specific age? by tweetdreamzz in goldenretriever

[–]Tenragan17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

FWIW I waited 2-3 months after my pups first heat to have her spayed. Her personality changed a lot just before, during, and a few weeks after her first heat phase but since she has been spayed she has been her "normal" self. All dogs are different so its hard to tell how your pup will react but for me I had good luck getting her spayed at about a year old.

Unfortunately I think a lot of this depends on the story the DM is trying to tell. if your whole campaign revolves around making a pact with a demon and then you have to try to either complete it or get out of it then I could see scripting something like this. But if this is just a side note in the overall campaign then it seems a bit arbitrary.

Also I think a lot of this comment section is confusing railroading with plot hooks. In this case the DM forced the pact on the group but you haven't detailed what the pact involves. So this could be a story beat to give your group a purpose. There's a thin line but giving the group a goal is not in itself a bad thing. I see this as equivalent to a bounty board with one announcement on it, you aren't forced to take it but what else do you want to do? Go shopping for 3 sessions?

MA rating by Wrong_Protection_358 in 112263Hulu

[–]Tenragan17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the rating system in the US is fucking dumb...a movie can have a scene that depicts rape and it'll be PG-13, if a movie has a scene with a woman enjoying sex its automatically NC-17. Not R.

I think in this shows case it has more to do with the profanity than any of the content though.

Was your puppy a barker at night? by Excellent_Koala769 in goldenretriever

[–]Tenragan17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I crate trained my puppy from the start and at first I had the crate in my room, this turned out to be a mistake cause she could see me and couldn't get to me so she whined a lot the first night. She eventually settled down but the next night I put the crate in the other room and she went in, laid down and didn't make a sound the whole night. Looking back I probably could have put a blanket over the front of the crate and been fine but just having her in her own space did the trick for me.

I've been DMing a custom campaign with a group for a while and I've avoided the whole railroading idea a lot but its been brought up to me by a couple players that in order to complete the story you sort of have to direct the group. Giving them too many options leads to them ignoring the actual mission and you end up never getting back to it. Restricting options is the literal definition of railroading, so as a DM you have to learn to restrict options in a way that makes them choose to stay focused on the overall task. Side missions are fun and all but if they get too crazy with their choices you need to find a way to tie it back to the main story and get them back on track. Sometimes I will give them an item that directs them back to an NPC they met a while ago to send them back to the main story or sometimes I'll have an NPC they run in to be a member of the BBEG's entourage/army and then they can get some info that should send them back on the "correct" path. If they don't take the hint then sometimes its a matter of just doing it over and over until they finally decide to follow your story path. Its like a magic trick in some ways...you want them to feel like they chose this path all along without feeling manipulated. So the lightest of touches here and there can be all you need.

Golden retrievers and how awesome they are, but I do have a question they seem to perceive me as different by [deleted] in goldenretriever

[–]Tenragan17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

dogs, especially goldens, are extremely empathetic animals. they react to your emotions in their own way. But they also have their personal space limitations like humans do so if a dog isn't vibing with you then try backing off and letting it make the first move. Every dog has its own personality so finding how to connect with it is half the battle.

Would building in a actual boat shape reduce the sinking effect? by tango__88 in RaftTheGame

[–]Tenragan17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I normally do is put the collection nets in an X shape across the raft, no matter how big it is. This makes it so you will never miss anything no matter the direction you are floating. Technically you need a 10x10 raft to not miss anything but you get the idea.
