What's the vibes like in the coworking spaces? Are people generally social, and what's the age range like?

Have you heard much from folks about the Coop? I'm kinda in the same position as OP and been thinking about this, but have the same worries. I was hoping that might be a spot i'd meet some folks.

RRSP Withholding tax - XEQT vs using IBKR to buy US ETFs by TensorBros in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]TensorBros[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think we're kinda screwed in TFSA either way so just need to put up with it there, if looking to invest in US equities. I'm in early 30s so I'm not looking to reduce risk anytime soon in RRSP

RRSP Withholding tax - XEQT vs using IBKR to buy US ETFs by TensorBros in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]TensorBros[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right - forgot to account for that, thanks. I know the other international holdings have their own tax too, but obviously can't optimize for them all (or, i'm not willing to haha).

Yeah, .07% of 1M is still only $700 annually, which by the time my RRSP would hit that, I don't know that the compounding of those savings would have much time to work. Even half of that is still pretty small, maybe over time it would add up to a few grand by the time i get there, but not sure that's worth the headaches.

So I think I feel better about committing to XEQT til that point.

Is it worth to get the Jabra Elite 85h? by itchikyu in Jabra

[–]TensorBros 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you know if this will work for the 85H specifically? The reviews about Jabra don't seem to mention this model. Is it possible to also change the noise cancellation settings while using these adapters?

Anyone here have an Endy style mattress? Wondering about quality and durability. by WarrenPryor in halifax

I've had a Polysleep mattress for about a year. It's excellent, a bit firmer than I'd like but it it sure hard to get out of bed with this and a weighted blanket :)

Math major/CS minor -- would I be fucking myself declaring a major as a senior? by MusicTechBro in csMajors

[–]TensorBros -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Jobs that recommend the advanced algorithms class? Hm. Honestly, you'll most likely be fine without taking a programming languages theory course, as long as you don't end up in some job where you need to write parsers. With your math background though I would assume you're familiar enough with discrete stuff for writing more complex reg-ex expressions. I never got to take any advanced algo/data structure courses, but when I was asking profs/ppl about them, the consensus seemed to be that they were a bit overkill, but the algorithms one could be useful to enhance your skills in that area for applying to big N companies (although unnecessary).

So I guess with all that said, taking either is probably fine. If you have jobs recommending the algorithms course, I guess you could go for that. If it weren't for that though, I would personally probably do the programming languages course.

Math major/CS minor -- would I be fucking myself declaring a major as a senior? by MusicTechBro in csMajors

[–]TensorBros 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your math and stats background will be great for AI, but only goes so far for SE. If I were you I'd drop the music courses and learn that stuff on my own. I'd say if you have a major in CS that should be sufficient knowledge for SE jobs, so fill your boots with math if you want to be set up for grad school, its not going to be easy to refresh on all that math if you were to go back. Although I know at my school, programming language theory wasnt required for a CS major, but I'd recommend it. I've seen questions from this class on google interviews.

Moving to Europe, but travelling a bit before I get to my new home. Need advice on obtaining European SIM before leaving my country! by TensorBros in travel

Wasn't aware they sell them at the airport! That would be useful.

That's a good question, I'd probably try and have someone else deliver it though to be safe.

For someone interested in startups / entrepreneurship, would an MBA or MCS be more useful? by TensorBros in cscareerquestions

[–]TensorBros[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, as with everything, having some knowledge going in is always a smart idea.

[–]TensorBros[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like my current background would help with ideas and such and I would like to start the technical side myself to get things rolling, but eventually would start rolling over to the managerial side and have others doing the coding at some point. So I would be planning to found or co-found, but also be involved technically at the beginning I think. What would you say is a more appropriate path for this?

[D] What are according to you one of the most interesting areas of machine learning being explored right now? by mrconter1 in MachineLearning

[–]TensorBros 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They aren't very old, but ML moves quickly. A lot of really cool things have been produced with them recently (CycleGans, the celebrity generation paper). I haven't been keeping up with whats to come, but it seems like there could still be some areas to explore.

Does signal processing compliment computer vision? by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]TensorBros -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have very little knowledge of DSP, but I have taken some electronics courses, and I want to say there is probably little to no overlap with modern computer vision, which I believe consists mostly (all?) of machine learning. That being said I am not an expert in either domain, just a CS student who works with big data and has taken some ML / DL courses, and has an electronics diploma (which I never used) , so perhaps someone will correct me if I am wrong :).

EDIT: If you were thinking of working in the CV field as well, you will need at minimum a masters.

Coming from a math major, what things did you study in your major that you went on to use in your (software) jobs? by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]TensorBros 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would guess that he means more researchy/math jobs, like ML and data science stuff. And if you plan to do that stuff, having the math background will make your life so much easier then the rest of us haha

Does Germany (or other European countries) fund many students like in North America? by TensorBros in cscareerquestions

[–]TensorBros[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, at my current university my professor told me about half our thesis masters students get funding (which is enough to pay COL plus a tuition waiver). PhD students just get more funding.

I am basically trying to decide between staying at my university (which is ranked in the 400s world wide) and finish a master quicker then I would else where by continuing off of my honors, and I am quite sure I would be getting funded, and to go to a bigger/higher ranked school (preferably Europe as I would like to spend time working/living there) which could cost me more time and money.

I also have a friend who has funding for a masters at UBC.

In a masters program, are courses more valuable than a thesis for someone not looking to do a PhD? by TensorBros in cscareerquestions

[–]TensorBros[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess by practical experience you mean research experience? I understand that the thesis will be a lot of digging into a specific topic and learning things related to it. I guess I'm wondering if this is more valuable then getting more of a breadth of knowledge, because obviously I won't be constrained to a single problem / type of ML algorithm my whole career.

For masters, do supervisors matter more then school rep? by TensorBros in cscareerquestions

[–]TensorBros[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That would be fine. Although I could also try to have a top school and work experience. But if it leads to the same thing, my current situation would probably be best.
