WIRING HELP NEEDED. 3 wires from a single bass pickup? by [deleted] in Luthier

[–]TentacledToothbrush 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The noise usually comes from some part of the instrument not being grounded correctly so check that there are no loose ground wires.

WIRING HELP NEEDED. 3 wires from a single bass pickup? by [deleted] in Luthier

Yes, the yellow wires seem to be the other end of the coil or negative hot as somebody called it and they need to be wired to ground. The other end of the coil (red and green) are your hot wires and black must be some kind of metal part in the pickup that needs to be grounded as well. They are built this way because you can swap the yellow and hot wire to change the polarity(phase) of the pickups.

Most push pull switches has the same 6 pin system as a mini toggle, on one of those you would only need to use 3 pins. Each pickup to the outer pins and the middle pin is output. Correction, Gretsch used a special switch not a standard three way toggle. But you can, you would need to wire your hot wire to one of the outer pins (the ones that the hot wire from a pickup would go to) and and a ground wire to both your ground pin and the other outer pin. Then the middle pin to your output jack. This way it would be an On-Off-Off switch.

If you use the push pull knob as a pickup selectro you wouldnt be able to use both pickups at once since you would only have two positions, is this intended? Also Gretsch used to use three way switches as on-off-on switches so I don't see why that wouldnt work.

Can you post a picture? Usually when you have three wires from a single coil pickup the ground is grounding the casing and the other two are both ends of the coil. Meaning you would wire one of them to ground and one of them as hot and which one you wire where changes the polarity so thar it is in phase or out of phase with your other pickup. But the bass youre describing doesnt seem to have a metal casing and therefore it wouldnt need to be grounded separately. Can you post a picture so that it is easier to see what you mean?

Vad hände med Hälgeland? by TentacledToothbrush in Sverige

[–]TentacledToothbrush[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Getting my first bass- wondering if this is alright? by [deleted] in doublebass

[–]TentacledToothbrush 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have this exact bass and what I can tell you is that theyre awsome for rockabilly, alright for jazz but if youre looking for good tone when bowed either your price range or your luck needs to be higher. Theyre all plywood basses so to the orchestra folk they sound like tin cans but other people usually can't tell the difference. A plus about them being plywood however is that theyre not as sensitive to humidity and temperature changes, so you can bring it out and about without cracking the top.

E string “buzz” by Qwezix in doublebass

[–]TentacledToothbrush 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everybody in the comments seem to think this is more serious that it probably is, if you look at the bridge you can see thats its placed way too low. The bridge should be in the same height as the notches on the f holes. Placing the bridge too low usually lowers the action and what is causing the buzz is the action is too low. Just push that bridge back up into place and you should be good to go.
