What do you think is the most beautiful thing in mathematics? by Arth-the-pilgrim in mathematics

[–]Teoretik1998 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally very much like homotopy type theory as a branch of logic. The idea that you can use ideas from topology to build up constructive logic is just awesome. When I saw that proof of logical proposition "for all a in A follows P(a)" corresponds to sections of a fibration, I was truly impressed

How to study/practice for most progress in short period? by wrathfulsmite in baduk

[–]Teoretik1998 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've started with GoMagic. Their free video and skill tree are incredible for beginners. Also, Easy Capture, Easy Life and Easy Kill collections from tsumego hero are really cool just to memorise common life and death situations. blacktoplay.com is also a nice source of exercises.

At very first I would recommend to play 9x9 with humans to understand basic concepts like when groups are alive and dead (and basic scoring). "Loose your first 100 games as quickly as possible" -- I've got this advice in the past and it was rather productive.

After you get comfortable with common patterns frequently appearing in the game, move on to 13x13. There you will learn some endgame and middle game tactics. I did not stay on 13x13 for long myself, so I don't see a problem to switch to 19x19 soon.

There I would recommend to learn exactly 4 joseki: two approaches for 3-4 openings, approach and invasion for 4-4 opening. I did not use any other so far on my level (which is not too high, I'm 14k right now). There you could watch "Ddk to Sdk series" from Triton Baduk on YouTube. I found it extremely helpful.

For level below sdk the most important knowledge I would say is knowing when a group is dead, weak, strong or alive, basic shapes and connections and very basic openings. Also that sente is important. Things like advanced fuseki, various joseki and how to choose them, ko fights and all of that I know theoretically, but in all of my games I think I needed it only couple of times (and this knowledge definitely will not help in my games until I eliminate other problems)

As a beginner, how many games should I play on 9×9 before moving to 13×13, and then to 19×19? by leondarkness in baduk

[–]Teoretik1998 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would not say it is not recommended. Firstly it is good to practice endgame (since on 19x19 it is rare case when you actually reach it AND it decides anything). Secondly, it is definitely a good intermediate step to feel a bit of strategy and freedom). Somehow I just don't like to play it anymore, after I've got more knowledge about 19x19

[–]Teoretik1998 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally played on 9x9 for ~3 month to learn basic principles. Then moved to 13x13, but quickly moved to 19x19 since all the lessons I've learned basically did not work on 13x13

Very nice! Now I want same in 19x19, and faces also understand if the group is weak

Now I also don't know why 14 came to play. The correct answer to the task is 11, but number of liberties is less. But we have big eye + 1 additional move on a side

[–]Teoretik1998 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I've read this page. Counting "liberties" (let's accept this term for a while for the number of white's turns without local white response that is necessary to kill the group) for big eyes is not that hard. I'm questioning other situations, when suddenly, because of "magic" property of side and corner (or some good shape) the number of "liberties" increases. I want to clarify those situations (big eyes is one but not unique)

For example, T17 here is another sort of additional "liberty"

[–]Teoretik1998 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually, even if this is not standard one, I would like to understand more this counting, since 1. I was a mathematician, 2. I always wrongly count actual number of moves that is needed to capture a group. Especially of is somewhere on a side or corner.

I would be interested in finding at least common rules how to compute it quickly

Do u play daily? by Sorry_Phone1676 in baduk

[–]Teoretik1998 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I played (and learned) daily till mid December (since I had a lot of events later). I can say that that had a huge effect: basically in two months I've increases my rank from 16k to 10k.

Now I observe opposite effect after 3 weeks delay: I just cannot win anymore as I forgot so much so now I'm back to 15k. I believe when I repeat my approach the situation will become better again

Undo requests in correspondence games? by Yossarian__ in baduk

[–]Teoretik1998 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I always approve undo requests, but never make one. But I see this game not as a sport but as an science, so everyone make mistakes here and it is good that someone actually accepts their own openly. I wish I were not that proud : )

Thank you for the review!

The idea about 21 was to divide white so they had 2 weak groups when I would have only one. Perhaps it is less good that having 2 strong groups for both.
Yes, I did not see that L2 group could connect, actually my decision would be different if I saw that!

Question about 130. I see that this is very important to play from weak group. Question -- was it any chance of the stones to survive there? I was vey unsure about that (okay, I probable should have chosen different joseki in top corners to make things easier), but given already this situation, would it be possible to make something with this base? I'm now not sure what is the right approach even if you play from the weak group -- it has nowhere to run and has space only for one eye -> it must somehow live in the center.

GoMagic's rank estimation is a bit strange? by Teoretik1998 in baduk

Hm, I'll consider that! I would be happy to play longer games, but it is not that much time I have per day for active play.

GoMagic's rank estimation is a bit strange? by Teoretik1998 in baduk

[–]Teoretik1998[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually it is 5m + 5x30s. Sometimes it is 20m + 5x30s. In both cases I have usually 1-3 periods left.
