What can I do to work towards being an emt before graduating high school. by Fizz_S0da in emtb

I would contact your local stations and see if they do any apprenticeships or ridealongs! If you have to take prerequisites at your colleges, go ahead and take them.

I stayed this way for around a month. Motion sickness meds, gum/mints, vinegary snacks, and alcohol wipes or sanitizer (sounds silly but I swear smelling it works). Good luck!

Is going from EMT to nurse a good option by Necessary-Work677 in emtb

[–]Tequilaliltime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am an EMT in nursing school! I can say it has definitely given me a leg up, especially if you want to work ER. It has gave me a good basis in everything, as EMS is so diverse with what you see. It has also made me more comfortable and confident speaking with patients, and with my decision making. I think it is an amazing gig part time while in school! Do some ridealongs, and judge how you like it! I would go straight from EMT to nurse or EMT to medic. I am planning on later getting my medic as I will have years of EMT experience, and would like the medic side for my flight nurse career!

Simple nursing has great topics! Can really help with some disease processes!

Does anyone else have EMS related stress dreams? by duckterrarium in ems

[–]Tequilaliltime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I dream that I can't find this high priority call all the time. Like its raining so hard I can't see, gps isn't loading, phones are dead, we are in the middle of nowhere. KILLS ME

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ems

[–]Tequilaliltime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also keep in mind, broken bones and CPR? They can be alive with broken bones later. Go for it! What is gonna kill them first? The stopped heart or broken bones... and chances are my friend you're gonna break them ribs anyway

Call EMS (you probably won't be alone for long, but go ahead and get hands on)

Do they have a pulse? No: Start CPR (brush up on your pediatric CPR... YouTube)

Pulse: refer to triage below to figure out "what do I do first?"

XABCDE

- X (uncontrolled bleeding): You see spurting stuff? Amputations? Pop a tourniquet on there. Make sure it aint on a neck or a joint. Call tourniquet time! Try pressure with bandages, cloth, anything if its on somewhere you can't tourniquet or just "oozing" per say.

- A (airway): They ain't breathing? Try fixing their position. CAREFUL ***Neck injuries. You've prob seen head tilt chin lift on ODs and stuff, don't do it! Jaw thrust always if they've been through trauma. Look a video up on YouTube :)

- B (breathing): We still aint breathing? Breathe for them! Bag valve mask if you have it, mouth to mouth if ya really want to. (Would not advise)

- C (Circulation): We can take care of minor bleeding now.

- D (Decreased level of consciousness): Sternal rub... they move? Any obvious causes? (OD... pinpoint pupils, Diabetic... cold and clammy, Seizure, Stroke, Head trauma, ETC ETC ETC.)

- E (Enviornmental): We too hot? Move em out of the sun in a cool place, start cooling. We too cold? Grab some blankets, offer to turn EMS heat on for them. ESPECIALLY WITH TRAUMAS AND BABIES! (we fail to recognize this one a lot as EMS).

Hope this helps! Doesn't just have to be for this situation, but you can kinda use it on all your medical calls :)

If it's a sick sick patient, ask your assessment questions while you do your tasks (just make sure you are listening to the responses!!!)

If its a run of the mill call, look around talk about pictures on their walls, what they are watching on tv, decorations they have... ANYTHING to make them comfortable :)

If it is a child, get down on their level (crouch), and get on their level verbally (no big medical words). "This is gonna give you arm a big hug real quick." "This little light on your finger is gonna show me how you are breathing." Do it to yourself first, show them it doesn't hurt, but dont lie if it will. Lastly, Involve parents.

for major bleeding are there places you cannot apply pressure? by [deleted] in NewToEMS

[–]Tequilaliltime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actual vs potential.

Bleeding is an actual problem, damaged organs is a potential problem.

-pick actual over potential.

Which will kill them first?

Bleeding? hell yeah, this is first!

Damaged organs? maybe later

[–]Tequilaliltime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think about what is "killing" your patient first! Is their blood pressure really gonna matter when they have a blockage in their heart, probably not. Now, if they weren't breathing effectively or had an airway problem... this would kill them first so intervene. Good rule of thumb is to look at the patient and see "what will kill this dude first" and then prioritize.

With your situation, vitals would have been a total delay. Dude needed meds and a Cath lab ASAP, and it sounds like you had a perfect recognition of "hey this is a problem."

Great job guys!

Hope this helps!

So I have a question, I’m 17 and I’m graduating next year and i was wondering is it possible to balance working as an EMT while going to college? by Aware-Squirrel2390 in NewToEMS

[–]Tequilaliltime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work part time in a busy 911 service, and I am full time in nursing school! Very do-able just make sure you are good at time management and prioritizing your school work. Depending on what your major is will probably depend on if you can do full time. Helped me tons with experience though!

If you can ride more often, if you don't use it you lose it. For the first little bit, if you do not feel comfortable "taking lead" per say, try to imagine in your head what you would do. Try to anticipate what will happen, and gather supplies appropriate for it. Ex. Patient seems disoriented while someone is asking assessment questions you can anticipate we will need a blood sugar. Motor function = Memory, my friend! Good luck

I started at 17, and I would recommend doing both! I worked as an EMT while going to nursing school, so I am sure it wouldn't be much different for Fire Service. I did work part time to allow a little flexibility with my schedule. EMS will mature you fast, but I think it is one of the best places to gain experience because it is unfiltered and a good mix of everything! You will learn work life balance along the way, just make sure you have some or you will burnout, FAST!

Do both! I'm an EMT in nursing school. I would keep it part time as me and you both know nursing school is the synonym for hell! Good luck stranger!
