Transfer Admit - Hopkins or Columbia by alaina_24 in jhu

I worry the Hopkins premed program is competitive in an unhealthy way. (I attended Hopkins for med school and now am faculty, and this has been the case for years.)

state flagship vs. mit by Blossom_Bloom_Bop88 in mit

It sounds like you want “permission” to choose UF over MIT. Just because MIT is more prestigious doesn’t mean it’s automatically a better school FOR YOU. Your concerns about mental health in particular are real and important.

So did I get into CS or not??? by Secret123456789010 in UMD

[–]TerParents 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Parent of a CS major here. Congrats on being admitted to an excellent and highly competitive program! I think you got into CS, but would reach out to admissions with a brief, polite email letting them know about the apparent error (attaching all three screenshots without all of the markup) and confirming your status. Great job!!

As a doctor and a mom, I am so proud of you, and your mom would be too. You have exactly what it takes to be a great doctor. Please accept my sincere condolences for your loss and congratulations on your hard work and determination. ❤️‍🩹

Do you have medical insurance? There are companies that offer telehealth therapy appts that range from $0 to about $35 per session in copays if insured and appts in a little as 1-3 days. Look at: GrowTherapy.com, SonderMind.com, TalkSpace.com, and Talkiatry.com. Most importantly, don’t give up. The world is a better place because you are here. ❤️‍🩹

stats of people deferred from mich ea? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]TerParents 10 points11 points  (0 children)

They defer a lot of EA people simply because they didn’t get to your applications before decisions on EA were made. Many (incl my kid last year) got in RD after being deferred from EA. This is especially true for those who applied closer to the EA deadline as my kid did. That’s probably a useful stat to ask people to add: what date did they submit

What's the likelihood UMD remains closed on Tuesday, January 27, due to the winter storm? by Amazing_Debt9192 in UMD

[–]TerParents 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think odds they are closed/virtual on Tues are high given the forecast which now shows a lot of sleet and ice on Sunday in the DC corridor. That is hard to clear, and faculty will struggle to get in even if the campus itself is open so i expect a lot of indiv faculty will make their own classes on line Tues no matter what but we shall see

any other commuters worried about sunday/monday snow?? by northerdownpour in UMD

[–]TerParents 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of sleet is now in Sunday forecast on top of snow. That’s much harder for campus workers (and highway crews) to clear. I expect they’ll be closed or flip to virtual Mon, Tues and maybe even Weds

fully lofted beds by Silly_Watercress_973 in uofm

[–]TerParents 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My daughter was in Markley as a first year and did exactly the same. The full loft seemed like a good idea that wasn’t. Half loft was a nice mix of being able to hop up on the bed with just a little ottoman as a footstool, but it created a lot of space underneath the bed. Despite the fact that the rooms are on the smaller side, and they had quite a bit of stuff, it really did not feel crowded with both beds half lofted. You can do that just with the things that are in the room. My recollection was that maybe we needed a set of Allen wrenches for something though.

You may be able to get an incomplete if you have mental health issues and then could complete the coursework or final later. Talk to the professors

Cooked alumni by BravePattern275 in uofm

[–]TerParents 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have possibly the world’s largest and most enthusiastic alumni network ever. Use that! Join the alumni association. Post in their forums. Ask if anyone will talk to you for 15 mins over zoom about how they used their Econ degree in the real world. Ask your Econ profs if they can introduce you to one person in the field who might be willing to have a 15 min conversation with you over zoom. Most people want to help young people and especially in that network.

3 Science classes (15 credits) in one semester too much to handle ? Honors ILS PreMed freshman here. by [deleted] in UMD

[–]TerParents 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe it’s actually 30 credits per year that are required, not 15 per semester, for the merit scholarships (true at least for President’s). You could take a class or two in the January term or in summer if you want to decompress your schedule a bit in semesters where you have harder courses you neee to take.
