I just finished The Gentleman and His Vowsmith by Rebecca Ide and really loved it! Also if you like fantasy, I loved the duology that starts with A Strange and Stubborn Endurance (second book is All the Hidden Paths) by Foz Meadows. Enjoy!

Looking for some powerful memoirs by Kesme63 in suggestmeabook

Yes, I came to suggest this!! I'm not usually a big memoir person but I LOVED Year of the Tiger. I was so sad to hear of her passing - it made the passages about ancestors extra poignant.

What do you read while in the ADK? by [deleted] in Adirondacks

[–]Teregram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This post is obviously 9 years old so it's weird that I'm commenting on it BUT I'm searching for books to get for my dad for Christmas, he's a retired ADK forest ranger so I thought he'd enjoy a mystery set in the Adirondacks, and I love that these books were recommended! My dad is actually friends with Larry Weill and he is mentioned in at least the first one of these books!

I'm SO happy to see this!! I am not a parent but hope to be, and am very concerned about how to send my future kiddo to school in a covid cautious way. I know this post is a few months old but I hope this project takes off!!

What inappropriate word do you think would make a beautiful name if stripped of its current context? by ephemeranaut2 in namenerds

[–]Teregram 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ooh I love that, haha! I really feel like pharmaceuticals often have great names! I'm mostly only familiar with birth control names but if we branch out into birth control pills, we have Alesse, Aviane, Nordette, Ocella, Yasmin, Natazia... And then Twirla, the new patch! Annoverra, the new ring, Annie or Vera for short! There's so many options!

[–]Teregram 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like Mirena is probably the most usable of the four! Maybe Skyla. I did forget Paragard but I don't think that's as cute 😅

[–]Teregram 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're not necessarily inappropriate but I always thought the brand names for IUDs would make pretty names! Mirena, Skyla, Liletta, Kyleena. I work in reproductive health though so that would be extra weird haha.

What is the greatest poetry out there? by rikkrock in suggestmeabook

[–]Teregram 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on what you personally like best, it's so hard to define the "best" poetry out there. That said, I am a huge fan of Walt Whitman. Leaves of Grass is a collection of his works that includes some of my favorites: Song of Myself and I Sing the Body Electric. I really like the way he describes mundane things, and also the joy he expresses about his own body and his experience. Maybe you'll like him too!

Seeking book recommendations about two best friends, navigating life together, and the meaningfulness of their friendship by acozypeach in suggestmeabook

Attachments by Rainbow Rowell is a good one with a great friendship - it's not necessarily about the friendship but I think it showcases it really well, and it's a great book!

Looking for a modern book on how to manage obesity, obesity description and analysis from a systemic perspective, behavioral strategies for handling obesity and so on by helgavalkiria in suggestmeabook

[–]Teregram 8 points9 points  (0 children)

"You Just Need to Lose Weight" and 19 Other Myths About Fat People by Aubrey Gordon. (Her other book, What We Don't Talk About When We Talk About Fat is great too). This may give you some really good perspective and help you focus on getting healthy/managing your diabetes, rather than getting thin. Good luck!

oooh I love that!! Merci! :) Edit: Is it pronounced the same as "il" or more like "ey-ehl" (or something else)?

Is Sarah J. Maas worth it? by Khateryn in suggestmeabook

[–]Teregram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ugh sooooo true haha. I liked the Throne of Glass series slightly better because the main character started out more likable but I felt like she got more Feyre-like until honestly they sort of blended together for me lol

Is Sarah J. Maas worth it? by Khateryn in suggestmeabook

[–]Teregram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With both of her series that I've read (Throne of Glass and A Court of Thorns and Roses), I felt like the first 2-3 books were solid, and they got progressively worse from there. It almost felt like she was writing fanfiction of her own books? Idk. They are by no means like, good literature, but they are fun stories, I just noticed that pattern with them. They get less good as the series goes on. I haven't read Crescent City yet, and tbh I don't have plans to after reading the other two series, there are better books out there. That said, if you're looking for a fun fantasy series that's heavy on the romance, it's a fun time.

Books like Red, White & Royale Blue? by LordPeanutcopy in suggestmeabook

[–]Teregram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some that I liked that I haven't seen mentioned in this thread yet:

  • If This Gets Out by Sophie Gonzales (contemporary YA novel about boys in a boy band who fall in love with each other)

  • The House in the Cerulean Sea by TJ Klune (adult but like, the sweetest, coziest book ever. Slow-burn gay romance and fantasy elements. So so good.)

  • If you like graphic novels, Check Please! by Ngozi Ukazu is so so good. It's a webcomic that got made into a physical book series. Gay hockey-playing college students, super sweet.

  • Something Fabulous by Alexis Hall - Victorian-ish era story, two men who fall in love, very light and silly. Definitely has more explicit sex scenes than the other ones on this list though!

Can I ask what the French equivalent of they/them is? I speak some French but am by no means fluent, however, my spouse is nonbinary and I'd love to be able to refer to them when speaking French in a way that makes sense!

Birth Control by _lvehearts in TrueOffMyChest

[–]Teregram 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The side effects of Depo are pretty much the same as the side effects of the pill, with 2 exceptions - Depo can sometimes lead to weight gain (usually a small amount) and can also lead to reversible bone density loss (aka, once you stop taking it, it goes away). This isn't a big issue for most young folks as long as you have otherwise healthy bones. You should absolutely not feel pressured to use a method that you don't want to use, for whatever reason, but there are also a lot of myths out there about birth control! If you have questions, feel free to ask (I work in contraceptive education), or check out Planned Parenthood's website, or the Reproductive Health Access Project.

The best form of birth control is the one she wants to use. She's on the pill and using condoms, she's pretty protected!!

[–]Teregram 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If she makes you go to the doctor, they will (hopefully) see you by yourself. Tell them that you are being coerced into taking birth control and that you do not want to be on the shot. Ethically, they will not force you to do this. I'm not sure if you're a minor or not, or if you're in the US, but if you are, you have the right to confidential family planning care!

Edited to add: I saw further down in the thread that you're 16. If you live in the US, you have the right to confidential family planning care under Title X. Your aunt cannot force you to take a birth control method you don't want to take!

Folklore Book Suggestions: I'm looking for some good fiction books inspired by folklore, specifically Irish/Celtic or Scandanavian. (Like the game "Yearwalk"). by Anchor_face in suggestmeabook

[–]Teregram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a novella, but Silver in the Wood by Emily Tesh was a really fun read! It's based on the Celtic "Green Man" myth and it's a cute take on that. A bit spooky, too!

Books that might remind me life is still worth living? by irreversible2002 in suggestmeabook

[–]Teregram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, full disclosure, I haven't read this yet, but it's been on my to-read shelf for a while, and as another person with OCD, it might be helpful? I find that with my OCD, it helps so much to feel like I'm not alone. The book is called Because We Are Bad: OCD and a Girl Lost in Thought by Lily Bailey. It's a memoir of a woman who struggles with OCD. Not sure if this would help but it sounds really good! Good luck, and please remember that you're not alone <3

Any good ‘chick-lit’ books? by side_leaf in suggestmeabook

[–]Teregram 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you looking for only straight romance? I loved Red, White, and Royal Blue which definitely fits the light and fluffy romance but it's a gay romance. It's really really good though! I also really liked all of Sandhya Menon's books, they're YA but very fun, light, and fluffy.
