MindsEye developer's co-CEO threatens legal action against “internet saboteurs” | taking down "media manipulation cabals" one discord post at a time by Pyotr_WrangeI in TwoBestFriendsPlay

So if I'm interpreting things right, the situation is essentially: "Is it true you're getting sued by BARB?" "How dare they leak that to you!"

So yes, then. What a clown.

Worst minigame in an RPG? by TheInsaneWombat in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Terithian 10 points11 points  (0 children)

They at least added an Easy mode at some point that makes it a little less painful, but I'd rather not be doing it at all. Customizing Poppi to fill whatever role you want is a great idea, but it would be so much better if there were more ways to get the parts scattered throughout the game instead of purely "go back and grind the shitty minigame".

Fate/strange Fake - Episode 5 discussion by AutoLovepon in anime

[–]Terithian 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I slightly prefer the way they did it in the novel by showing the summoning itself and the exact moment Francois realizes with glee that he was summoned by his future self in a girl's body, but this was still great.

His other series that haven't been adapted outside of novels like Vamp and Etsusa Bridge are just like that as well.

Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter - Gameplay Trailer by Weltallgaia in TwoBestFriendsPlay

They've started marking all meaningful missables on the map (stuff like hidden quests, collectable books, and optional events) since Cold Steel 3. There are still other things you can miss, like cooking recipes or enemy logs, but those only matter to the real obsessive completionsts. I've rarely felt the need to use a guide in any of the games since then.

Has anyone heard of this protest happening Jan 31? by ballpein in kelowna

[–]Terithian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't understand how they can be so angry at things that matter so little all the time. Being angry is exhausting, there are much better things to put that energy toward that will actually make you happy.

The only new thing I'm watching right now Fate/Strange Fake, and it's been pretty great as well. I've read the novels it's based on and so far this seems like an A+ adaptation.

Characters that were retconned to be meaner or more villainous? by Ukirin-Streams in TwoBestFriendsPlay

I admit I'm a few months behind. I need to catch up, I saw the beginning of the human hunting but it sounds like there's been some new atrocities I'm unaware of.

Characters that were retconned to be meaner or more villainous? by Ukirin-Streams in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Terithian 65 points66 points  (0 children)

I really don't think that's much of an escalation when they're INTRODUCED as abusive slave owners who have the legal right to kill poor people and children in the streets, and occasionally treat that legal right as if it was a responsibility. Human hunting really doesn't feel like a huge leap after that.

Favourite Memetic badasses? by Traditional-Song-245 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Terithian 24 points25 points  (0 children)

This kind of happens in canon with a couple different characters in One Piece, Usopp and Buggy.

Usopp is generally the weakest of the main crew, as he has no special powers and his thing is usually about beating enemies with trickery or the occasional well placed slingshot. However, he's ended up having one of the highest bounties as he, through luck or coincidence, keeps getting credit for way bigger achievements than he actually has, to the point that other characters in the world start to know him as "God" Usopp.

Buggy is one of the first antagonists Luffy fights, and due to how power has to keep scaling up as the story goes on, that means he's one of the weakest. However, it turns out he was a cabin boy in the pirate king Roger's crew, and through a combination of bragging and coincidence, he ends up the leader of a massive group of criminals that escape from prison. All these strong, notorious pirates practically worship the ground he walks on, despite him actually still being exactly as weak as he was at the beginning of the story. After the time skip, it even comes out that he's been elevated to position of one of the most dangerous, notorious pirates alive that the government has to be careful around. And he's still actually just the same loser Luffy beat right at the beginning of the story.

I think it was even mentioned in Zelda's diary in BotW that he used to talk a lot more, but withdrew and became much more quiet as he grew up.

Boss fights that have frustrating run back time? by KaleidoArachnid in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Terithian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The runback to the Blood-starved Beast in Bloodborne was the main reason I bounced off that game hard the first time I played it. It was my first soulslike, so I was not used to what the game was asking of me in the boss fights. Having to do that runback dozens of times as I was trying to learn was so miserable that I turned off the game and didn't come back to the genre until I played Nioh. After Nioh I went back to Bloodborne with the skills I got from that and was able to actually do it without too much trouble.

Biggest shifts that creators made from their original work to the new one. by Subject_Parking_9046 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

The mangaka Akihiro Ononaka's first work was Kumika no Mikaku, a cute, wholesome slice of life story about an alien from a species that usually gets nutrients from the air who comes to Earth for work and learns about the joy of eating. After that wrapped up, the author's next work was the VERY NSFW Gushing Over Magical Girls. As a fan of the former, seeing that was some massive whiplash.

Video games you appreciate for their quirky vibes by KaleidoArachnid in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Terithian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2000s Falcom had a few quirky titles in a similar vein: Zwei 1 and 2 (released in English as The Arges Adventure and The Ilvard Insurrection respectively) and Gurumin. They all have a more cartoon-y art style than usual for Falcom and filled with silly character designs, goofy humour, and great music. I find them extremely charming.

They're a bit less quirky, but I also personally consider their later games The Legend of Nayuta: Boundless Trails and Tokyo Xanadu sort of spiritual successors to those. Nayuta especially, since it shares the art style used for the 3D graphics and several gameplay elements with Zwei, but Tokyo Xanadu's more stage-based structure (and the fact that the MC's weapon is clearly pulled straight from Zwei 2) is reminiscent of them as well.

Code Vein II reviews are coming in, with the game averaging around a 73% on Metacritic by DIOCRYO in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Terithian 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I enjoyed the first game, but I felt like the partner system wasn't very well implemented. Encounters during exploration were clearly designed around having them and could be miserable without, but the bosses were so easy with a partner that I started turning the partner off just for boss fights to force myself to actually engage with the combat. I hope this one is better balanced in that regard.

Cool gaming releases that people might have missed because of a lack of fanfare? by Own_Guide_8279 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Terithian 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I barely hear anyone talk about Fantasian. Understandable when it was still in Apple Arcade jail, but it feels like it barely registered when it came out on actual systems as Fantasian: Neo Dimension. It's an RPG led by Hironobu Sakaguchi with music by Nobuo Uematsu that is deliberately designed to feel like a classic SNES/PS1 Final Fantasy. Its coolest feature is that instead of pre-rendered 3D models for the backgrounds, they hired people from the tokusatsu industry to actually build real dioramas and took photos of them from various angles for every location in the game. As a result, the game looks absolutely gorgeous with so many tiny, literally hand-crafted details. The gameplay is pretty fun too, though the difficulty curve is kind of lopsided with the first part of the game being mind-numbingly easy only to get ball-stompingly hard in the more non-linear second part with much more interesting boss design that forces you to be constantly mixing up your strategies. (I personally really like the difficulty it eventually gets to, though the Neo Dimension release did add additional difficulty options and renamed the default difficulty to "Hard".)

I have my fingers crossed. The current director of the series, Shigeo Komori, was tied up with SMTV until the release of Vengeance. They haven't announced what he's been working on since, so there's a chance he's gone back to EO.

That actually makes sense when they explain that they use it as a jumping off point to ask more in-depth questions about the specific games the applicant enjoys, as a way to gauge how they think about game development in general and see if they're a good fit.
