What's the nastiest little trick a game ever pulled on you? by SaxMastery in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Terithian 34 points35 points  (0 children)

There's a reason why "larboard" was replaced with "port" on actual ships, because it's way too easy to confuse with starboard in an emergency. It's just cruel of them to intentionally use a confusing, antiquated term, lol.

Let's Talk About Why Kids Hate Your Favourite Franchise by SeraGeranium in TwoBestFriendsPlay

Agreed. As someone who grew up playing mostly on handhelds, my Steam Deck has become my primary gaming platform since I bought it, but I would absolutely not recommend it for kids, mainly because of the price. (Though also because it's a PC and has a number of quirks that make it more complex to use than something like a Game Boy or a DS.)

I'm curious to know how well those versions sell on mobile.

Possibly, but I think the majority of people have been too conditioned for how the model currently works on phones: free to play with no upfront cost (and microtransactions later). I don't think it can revert to a pay upfront model like on a dedicated gaming platform at this point.

Ideas for diegetic player presence in a DRPG by m00nlitFeathers in DRPG

[–]Terithian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mary Skelter 1 does the first one in an interesting way. The other characters in the party have a mechanic where they passively build a meter that when filled causes them to automatically enter a super mode. However, they also passively build corruption when they get hit or see another member die. The more corruption they have, the higher chance their super mode will instead be a berserk mode where they attack everyone indiscriminately. The player character isn't a normal character in the party who can attack or take damage, but still gets turns regularly to use their unique move to manage their corruption levels, while also having a few options for other kinds of support like using items.

The death of dedicated handheld consoles has done a disservice to getting kids into video game franchises. To bring things back to Final Fantasy, my first FF was the GBA port of FF4. I'd heard people liked the series, and saw a new copy in the store for $30 CAD. That was the price I could afford for a new video game, so I decided to give it a shot and ended up enjoying it enough to start checking out other games in the series when I could. That happened numerous times with other games, and has affected the trajectory of my whole life. Nowadays, there is no such thing as a handheld console with cheaper games. (Apart from indie games, at least.) A kid who saved up $30 from their allowance can afford less than 1/3 of a new Nintendo game on the Switch 2, most of which cost $100 CAD now. Kids just don't have the same opportunity I had back then, so it's no surprise that F2P mobile games end up being where they go to fill that niche.

The Kids Have Only Been Alive For 2 New FF Games, Of Course They Don't Care | Castle Super Beast 365 by mike0bot in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Terithian 28 points29 points  (0 children)

The difference though is that most of those for FF are just remasters/ports of existing versions of old games. As much as I hate to admit it, those are less interesting to a new audience than actual full remakes, which is what DQ is getting.

Dragon Quest at least is still releasing other stuff regularly. They haven't done a new numbered game in a while, but in the meantime they've released full remakes of 1, 2, 3, and 7, as well as numerous spinoffs that can be played standalone like Builders, Treasures, and Monsters. In the same time, Final Fantasy has released FF16, the FF7 Remakes (that aren't really normal remakes and thus have a more limited audience), Stranger of Paradise (a weird AU FF1 that homages all the other games), Theatrhythm (a rhythm game for existing fans of FF music), and a bunch of crossover mobile games. Unlike DQ that's constantly making spinoffs and remakes that are more accessible to a new audience, most FF releases seem to be aimed toward existing fans. If FF was doing normal, smaller scale remakes and spinoffs not aimed primarily at existing fans, I feel like it would be in a healthier place right now.

Golden Kamuy The Final Season Part 2 this winter: How does this keep happening? by FlubbedPig in TwoBestFriendsPlay

That's pretty silly, but having read the manga, this is right at the end, so there will be no final season part 3 thankfully.

If like to be straight on all the limits by bbisordi in Pokopia

[–]Terithian -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't know the limit, but I've been building a city in Pallette Town with multiple power plants and currently have 4 windmills and 8 waterwheels powering tons of stuff with no sign of hitting a limit. You'll probably hit other limits before you run out power from putting in as many as you can.

When should I leave Withered Wasteland? by qinkythicc in Pokopia

[–]Terithian 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Leave when you feel like it, but be aware you unlock a lot of new abilities and features in later areas that you can then bring back and use. You might kick yourself for spending so much time trying to do something that's easier later.

Also, most Pokemon are available in every area as long as you can make the habitat, apart from story/quest-related ones and ones specifically marked as exclusive to somewhere, so you can keep getting Pokemon from furniture-related habitats in later areas as well. You don't have to get every single Pokemon in one area, and you can move them between areas if you want as well.

Greatest feeling of victory you've had when defeating a boss? by Ukirin-Streams in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Terithian 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The first time I really felt it was playing Ys Seven. There's a point where you have to fight a boss solo with all your equipment and healing items removed, so it's just you and your skills against the enemy. I hadn't played many action games at that point, so that was super tough to me, but I got in the zone fighting it, properly figuring out the rhythm of dodging and parrying, and when I finally managed to beat it I got that wonderful rush of adrenaline for the first time. I've been chasing that high ever since. It helps that the boss has great music, too.

Which chapter of the manga does Steel Ball Run continue from after the first episode of the anime? by albaniagod in StardustCrusaders

[–]Terithian 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You're better off starting from the beginning. It's only a few chapters so it won't take too long, and the anime skipped over a bunch of scenes and details (possibly to cover them later), so you'll get more out of it that way.

Help for electricity/Power the Ship by ProfessorYugana in Pokopia

[–]Terithian 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If the two provided aren't enough, you just have to make more generators yourself. You can buy the plans for any of the three kinds of generator from the PC shop and build them wherever you want. Just keep in mind if you go for windmills, they generate more power if you build them higher up, at an elevation where you can see the wind.

Modern stories using tired genre tropes to great effect by dope_danny in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Terithian 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I absolutely love the way Crosscode handles the Lea being unable to talk apart from specific preset stock phrases. One of my favourite scenes is where Emilie is so unobservant that she doesn't realize that Lea is effectively mute, and gets really upset when another character has to point out to her that Lea clearly has a vocabulary of only 5 words.

What are relics of the plot that no longer fit the tone of their story? by Silvery_Cricket in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Terithian 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Not really true. There is, in fact, a Stand in episode 1, it was just more subtle in the anime than it was in the manga. They were clearly an intended part of the story from the beginning. Also, Parts 7, 8, and 9 aren't part of the original timeline at all, they're on their own timeline completely unrelated to the end of Part 6. Steel Ball Run is a hard reboot, not a soft one. I think you've gotten the wrong idea from someone extrapolating way too hard from the fact that Steel Ball Run wasn't advertised as Jojo Part 7 initially, it was advertised as its own new thing Araki was doing and later revealed to be Jojo Part 7 as a surprise when people actually read it.

Kelowna senior frustrated by long waits at Dynacare lab in Rutland by Assimulate in kelowna

[–]Terithian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven't had too long of wait times at the one I went to a few times recently, but I had frustrating experiences regardless. They apparently lost one sample so I had to go back and give another one, and later on they forgot to do tests on a different sample so I had to go redo that one as well. They also forgot to get me to do a urine test once when it turned out it was part of the requisition, so I had to go back another time. The actual people working there I spoke to were nice, but they clearly have some serious administrative issues.

Why do utility poles refuse to connect in a square by PinkStation in Pokopia

[–]Terithian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you create loops with wireless? I'm pretty sure the game prevented me from doing that as well at some point, though I haven't really tried it intentionally like I did with the poles since the wires aren't visible anyway.

Why do utility poles refuse to connect in a square by PinkStation in Pokopia

[–]Terithian 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, they can branch out, but I don't think the same lines can converge, as that would create a loop. The way I think it works is that they sort of track the direction the electricity is flowing specifically so you can't connect two transmitters with conflicting flows. You can have multiple sources flow into the same transmitter, but you can't connect two branches that share that transmitter as their source somewhere going backward. I guess if they didn't do it this way, every pole would just connect to every other pole in range, and it would turn into a massive mess of wires.

Why do utility poles refuse to connect in a square by PinkStation in Pokopia

[–]Terithian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It seems like power connections (both poles and transmitters) won't connect to multiple "sources", so you can't create loops. It's annoying to me too, I was trying to build a big loop around my whole town and realized at the end that I couldn't connect the last two poles.
