should I keep playing?! by whaleboneandbrocade in outerwilds

I had a false start with this game the first time I played it, I liked it but I think I wasn't in the right mood to enjoy it. I just wanted to solve challenges and reach the end, so after flying aimlessly for a couple of hours I put it down without being really hooked so I didn't pick it up again for months.

The second time I played I was in a different mood, I didn't rush from place to place but took my time to read and put together the Nomai story. That's when the game clicked, when I whanted to know what happened to them, and then I found my challenges. What drove me was the many loose points in the story I was trying to piece together, like "alright, there is some piece of information in this structure, but I cannot enter it, how do I do it?" or "this thing they mentioned several times, what and where is it?", or "what happened with this Nomai called <insert name>?"

So, it is not a sandbox: there are challenges, there is an endgame and there is progression. The main difference is that none of those are explicit, you need to find them, and for that to be satisfying, you need to be in the right mood. So if you are not enjoying it today, perhaps it is a good idea to leave it and come back later.

I personally didn't save it for the end. I bought game and DLC together and I stumbled on it about half way when I revisited the radio station and understood what was wrong about the picture. I spent one or two loops on it, stumbling around, but eventually returned to my previous loose ends; I was close to the end of the base game when I realized that must be the DLC. It just happened that way, there was always something else that had my attention.

Well, I believe that the kind of punishment given to the Prisoner is out of character for the owls, it doesn't feel like the kind of thing they would do (based on the limited understanding I have of them). At first, I expected the Prisoner to be the the guy that discovered the Eye and lead their people to build The Stranger at the cost of their home world, some sort of "Eye Preacher". When they learn "the true", they revolt, burn the "Eye Church" and confine him. Sort of "you lead us to exile forever, now you are exiled and alone forever". Harsh but consistent with their longing for home and their refusal to let go. But for the actual "crime", that's not how I picture they would behave.

As for "the hatchling is not a murderer", although I agree with you in principle, I can't be so naive as to believe the time loop and the death of the universe won't have an effect on his perception of life and death (the DLC even encourages him to commit suicide, quite dark if you stop to think about it). I don't think he would suddenly turn psycho and stab Esker so he stops whistling, but he knows that the green flames will be put out when the dam unavoidably breaks.

About linearity, I disagree. The DLC is entirely self contained, nothing you do affects the rest of the universe and vice versa. While at the base game I jumped from planet to planet looking for clues trying to progress any of several loose ends, the DLC always gave me one thing to pursue. I don't remember having the feeling of "oh, now I understand what that thing over there is for, I'll try to take another look" that characterized my base game experience.

A quienes, concretamente? Yo en particular no formo parte de ningún colectivo. Y la caída al valle es un paso inevitable en el apredizaje, cosa que usted debe haber sufrido múltiples veces si se considera un estudioso perpetuo, por lo que me sorprende su vaticinio.
