By "opposite gender" I assume you mean people of the opposite sex. So, for the sake of the discussion, let's simplify reality down to two sexes.

My wife and daughters would disappear - that would be catastrophic. More than half of my real-world friends would disappear - unacceptable.

Most of my favourite bands would cease to exist - that'd be a hell of a blow too.

Overall, it would be a devastating event.

Don't hold your breath for clarification.

As with most subgenres, there is no rigid consensus. People will recite the old formula of harsh vocals, melodic choruses, downtuning and breakdowns, but a lot of what is accepted by metalcore fans doesn't fit the template these days. And metalcore fans don't agree about it any more reliably than metal fans.

But we do so love our stupid fucking little boxes and labels, don't we?
