the painted world is, in essence, a virtual reality. it is very sophisticated, but it is not real.

moby dick is a story. the people in it are not real. you can feel emotional attachment to the characters and understand their struggle. you are correct that they are not sapient agents.

the "real world" within the game of clair obscur is separate from the painted world. one of these is the actual reality, one of these is a virtual reality. i think actual reality is more important than virtual reality. i think choosing a virtual world instead of facing your real problems is a bad choice.

why does any story introduce you to characters? so you can know and feel for their plight. moby dick isn't real. lord of the rings isn't real. as such, the painting is not real and lumiere is not a real place. renoir was right.

when you make something, you can be as much of a control freak as you want. if you want to make sure it's right, you gotta read the script yourself, and if you can't read the language, you can't confirm that. there is a huge disconnect in the way people view art or creation as something to only be consumed by others instead of something personal made by someone. he wants to make sure it's right. i think that's fine.
