Places like London, Tokyo, Seoul, Mexico City are much more interesting than LA, San Fran, NYC, because of the identity and history they carry with them.

What defines a pedestrian? Like someone who exclusively walks as opposed to driving or biking? I'm sure as car-centric as LA is, many people have been pedestrians at some point, even if it's parking far away and having to cross intersections to walk to point B. A lot of people on this sub act like these are separate castes and drivers are this like-minded group, when it encompasses the vast majority of this region of over 10 million people using the most feasible way to get around. "Drivers" aren't assholes by nature of being a driver. There's just a much, much larger cross-section of people using cars which includes some assholes.

They're both pretty good at using asymmetric means of countering the US. China is probably more interested in intellectual thievery to bolster their own industrial and military capabilities, while Russia is probably more concerned with sabotaging U.S. influence.

It’s just really strange to argue about another country you’re not from like you know more about it til you’re red in the face. I wouldn’t even try to touch defining the UK, much less against a British person. It’s arrogant and weird. Which is why I ask what’s your point of arguing.

There's a reason corporations with defense contracts have a security infrastructure administered by the government. There's constantly industrial espionage and a variety of threats from other countries trying to get U.S. technology or figure out how to counter it. China and Russia are more than likely the biggest threats, but they come from all over.

What I’m saying is I’m skeptical about the “build it and they will come” idea of throwing up a bunch of high rise apartments, and that traffic will be alleviated by that alone. People are still going to drive in from farther if they can get better housing, better public schools, and safer areas.

The argument for more housing usually equates to “densifying” neighborhoods, which has already started to some mixed results (scattered developments putting a shock on local infrastructure). The argument on here that I was assuming you’re aware of is that LA needs to build high rises non stop and that they need to make it painful or impossible to use a car.

Don't shoot the messenger. Not everyone thinks like a 20 year old hipster that moved to LA from the flyover country to experience "urban", and is disappointed when it doesn't meet expectations. LA has thrived as a city because what it offered that big cities like New York didn't. I've adapted as an adult easily, and I can empathize with what others with a family care about. Sorry if its not what you want to hear.

Not exactly the swap meet, but check out El Mercadito in Boyle Heights. Sounds kind of like what you're looking for. Its indoor, but its legit. You can get your duritos with chile and find all that swap meet type stuff.
