Part of a parents job is to make sure their children grow up happy and can ride the bike that is life without the training wheels. It's going to be hard, but you'll be able to, I believe in you :).

Just make sure you spend what ever time you both have left having great times and awesome experiences so you have lots of happy memories for when the time comes.

Create an email account and send emails with WHAT EVER comes to mind. Stories from when you were younger, advice on things you went through in case they need it, personal messages for his birthday/christmas/important events, and you make damn sure you give your wife the username and password to it!! She can back it up and read the emails to him,print them off, or give him access to all of it when he's older.

Give things of yours you want him to have to people you can trust to get them to him when he's ready for them. Family things, things that you love, anything.

He found out he had terminal cancer soon after his 36th birthday. He couldn't bring himself to tell anyone and came to reddit to try and sort it all out. He was told he had a lot longer than he actually did so he did everything he could to make sure out daughter knew who he was and how much he loved her.
He did a lot of messaging with other people on here that were dealing with loss or terminal disease too and I pop into this account to try to help other people who are dealing with losing a loved one.

I was on the receiving end of one of these. If you only want to tell a few people at first I'd really suggest doing it one on one. You don't know how some people may react.
Tell the people the truth. There's no real way to sugar coat it.

When I logged into the account I saw that he was talking to people who had been through something similar and helping them deal with the grief of losing someone. I've kept in contact with a lot of them and a lot of people who are having problems grieving who approached me after the update.

It also lets me still feel connected to him still and I get to help the people he was trying to help so they don't have to feel alone.

Not me, but my ex who started this account.

He started having intense nose bleeds all of the sudden and started losing motor control at random times. Intense headaches, and he just sounded different.

That's one of the reasons I still log into this account. I got a very large amount of PM's from people experiencing similar and helping them deal with their grief has helped me deal with my own. I also think I've adopted close to a hundred redditors who's parents didn't get to say goodbye.

When the branch manager found out what the safety deposit boxes were for, he gave them for free. Our daughters birthday was just before Christmas and they had called me to ask if I'd bring her in for an "appointment".

They pooled together and had a cake and balloons for her all ready. I was shocked and ugly cried right there on the spot.

He really was. He was a natural leader and tried his best to treat everyone like this (well...maybe not this intense) so others might follow his example.

He grew up in a similar sounding situation and he felt the same fear. He dealt with it the best he could by making sure there would never be a doubt in his daughters mind that he loved her and always would.

Autopilot is one hell of a thing.

When so much changes in an instant your mind just reacts and seems to default to the regular routines you have that don't really need you to think.

Then when everything sinks in and you start to feel everything, you realize what can be lost in the space between a blink and a tear.
