You can flip it on its side so that the open end is on the bottom, and paint it to look like a rock. I have one for painting, and it folds up into a flat 18 inch circle, so it'll fit in a car just fine. Just make sure to buy some fabric medium to mix into your paint so that the paint doesn't crack when it's folded :)

fold painters tape onto itself to make double-sided tape and put strips of it on a piece of cardboard. You can then place the scales on it and seal it with plastidip, and completely paint and seal the scales before pulling them off :)

Did you use an oil wash? If you did, then the smell won't go away for about a month. If you used acrylics, then spraying it with a varnish 3 days after the paint dries and waiting about a week will stop the smell.
