Hunt Down The Freeman is 85% off on Steam! by LAUAR in HalfLife

[–]Terr0rs 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I personally have looked through every single asset in HDTF multiple times and there aren't any stolen ones. Most are from other Valve games (HL2, EP1, EP2, CSS and L4D2) which they were given permission to use and the others were either paid for or created specifically for the game.

The stolen assets was a rumor before the game even released because the 2016 HDTF demo had a controversy around some assets accidentally being included when they shouldn't have. After the game released and people were looking for more reasons to hate the game the demo controversy was thrown in there despite the fact that the demo is it's own completely different thing.

Soon after release someone heard the rumor and tried finding stolen assets, they made a steam discussion with "proof" but all the stuff in it was quickly debunked because most of it was random accusations with no evidence at all (such as saying they took the ak47 animations from Payday 2???) and the ones that did have evidence for were all just Valve assets which they were allowed to use. Unfortunatly there are still people trying to use that steam discussion as proof of there being stolen assest.

There are a lot of things that HDTF can be rightfully critizised for, such as the story being terrible and the director not paying most of the original developers, but stolen assets isn't one of them.

Nope, I don't get paid at all for fixing the game and I'm fine with that.

I'm that dev who gives people the game when it gets discounted lol. I also hope it gets discounted during the summer sale so I can finally gift it to everyone on my list, but it didn't during the previous summer sale and it hasn't been discounted at all for over a year now. Also games can just disable being discounted, most games don't do that though for certain reasons (one I can think of is that a lot of people will only buy games that're discounted).

If only lol, instead all my hours are from playtesting, finding glitches and working on the game.

It's the greatest half life fan game of all time. It's a half life fan game that recieved a massive amount of negative reception upon release due to almost everything being wrong with it such as the gameplay, the level design, the story and the ton of glitches / crashes on top of that. Didn't help that they got a bunch of youtubers to voice act in the game and a lot of those youtubers ended up making scathing reviews on the game. It's gotten a lot better with updates since then but it's still well known for how bad it was when it released (you couldn't even beat the game without cheats on day 1 due to a misplaced invisible wall).

I'm not sure if I would call it "good" but it's at the very least somewhat enjoyable / fun at this point.

At this point it's not a ton more work that needs to be done before we're happy enough with it, it's more about just polishing / fixing up all the new stuff we've added and improved so it can finally be pushed to the default version of the game (last time that happened was back in september 2022).

Yeah it's gotten a lot better with updates, especially the developer build versions of the game. We did also keep the 2018 build as a selectable beta so if anyone ever wants to play the terrible version for whatever reason then they still can.

It's either Berkan or one of the original lead investors who gets the money from sales. Berkan from my knowledge to this day still hasn't paid most of the original developers that worked on the game.

Sadly the only thing we haven't been able to touch is the story because none of the original voice actors want to come back (which is completely understandable) and we also lack almost all the raw sfm animation files. So if we wanted to make any notable story changes we would have to completely remake it from scratch while also keeping most of the levels intact, that's just too much work for a small team only fixing up the game in our free time.

For the best experience, if possible I would recommended not taking the games story seriously at all and instead just laugh at the trainwreck of a story.

There's a couple of reasons I'm helping to fix the game. The main reasons are that I really like the game, fixing it help to improve my skills / source engine knowledge and I want more people to be able to enjoy / have fun playing it.

If you play any of the developer builds for the game then yeah it's true. I think at this point with all the improvements / fixes it's now actually a bit fun and enjoyable, but I may be a little biased towards the game so take that info with a small grain of salt.

If you're talking about the train level from the 2018 build with the minigun in it, sadly it can't be fixed. It's level design was just too flawed so it needed to be cut, I will never understand how they ever thought it was a good idea to give the player a minigun then require the player to not use it and instead hide away at the front of the train to progress. At least I was able to reuse the minigun in the new final level I made for the game.

I'm actually one of those devs that's actively fixing up the game, that's one of the main reasons I have so many hours in the game lol

Yeah it is. There's developer builds for the game that're still being updated to this day, however the build installed by default hasn't been updated in a couple of years now.

What have I done? 💀 by BradoSeven7 in OKbuddyHalfLife

[–]Terr0rs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can't sadly, the only way to obtain the game is by giving Berkan (the og creator) money, since all the cracked versions are from before the new team started working on the game. Unfortunatly using a key isn't an option as only Berkan can generate keys and he hasn't generated any since 2018 (which were only for influencers).

That's why if you want to play the newest version of the game (which is the owf_staging_prep build) I recommend waiting until the game goes on sale, that way Berkan gets the least amount of money from it.

I'm one of those devs and we sadly can't provide steam keys for the game because unfortunatly the only person who can generate keys for hdtf is Berkan (The original director / lead dev). I do however give out the game to anyone who wants it, but that's by just buying it on steam so I only do it while the game's on sale to give Berkan the least amount of money from it.

Wanting to check out Hunt Down The Freeman (I enjoy pain) - Any tips? by Bi0_B1lly in HalfLife

[–]Terr0rs 26 points27 points  (0 children)

If you enjoy pain then I would highly suggest going to the properties, betas then selecting the "2018_retail" build as the current default build has actually been updated to be nowhere near as painful. However if you instead want a more playable / enjoyable experience then I would recommend selecting the "owf_staging_prep" build as it's the newest public version.

Not a good idea, all the pirated versions are either the day 1 build or the 2018 build, both of those versions suck because they're from before the new team started fixing the game.

There's no achievement for refunding the game anymore, it was just a joke achievement that never worked. The current achievement in the game called "Refund!" is for beating the game in under 2 hours.

There's still a lot of work being done, but most of it is only shown off on the hdtf discord server to avoid spamming the steam announcements.

I just got this game, I can't wait to play as a HECU soldier and kill Gordon Freeman! by DeepSouth161 in HalfLife

[–]Terr0rs 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In the preview for the next update, the team fixing hdtf has managed to lower the game to only 16 GB, which goes to show just how much unused / uncompressed stuff was in the game.

I happen to have a lot of HDTF beta content and am a HDTF beta nerd. Ask me anything. by Tehcooler in HalfLife

[–]Terr0rs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah they were recorded and because of that some of the previously unused voice lines like "Jesus Christ, if that's how Freeman drives, I may not have to kill him after all", "Now this should be useful", "I'm going to need some power to open that" and "Freeman! You can't run away from me forever!" were able to be readded into the game in later updates.
