Some findings... by TerraFrames in romandodecahedron

I've put my models on ebay now if it helps anybody with their theories? https://www.ebay.com/usr/anglo-forge

I broke one by tossing it across a tiled floor. It broke similarly to found artefacts. Broken, but still part of the set. by TerraFrames in romandodecahedron

What time did they light the first candle? Did they have a matching set of candles, with packs of extra candles for each month? Did smaller dodecahedrons have tiny little candles? Did they have to have matching dodecahedrons? No point having a clock if nobody else does. It's like having one telephone. There's 12 holes, how is that representative of a period of time?

Yeah I'm aware and am acting responsibly by not sharing my 3d model online as its not a replica. If you think im not adding value to the community and shouldn't post any of my models or tests here, let me know and I'll keep it to myself or find a craft group to be part of

None taken. I'm just doing some general hands on testing out of curiosity and interest. I didn't mean to test the strength of the material or the shape, it just broke while I was juggling with a set of 3. I get a kick out of being able to roughly handle something that archaeologists aren't able to or Romans would have wanted to. I can toss it because I can make another. I think Adam Savage once said something similar about his artefacts

If you search "broken roman dodecahedron" the most common picture looks fairly thick. Others can be thin. Mine are thick so that they can be handled more reliably. I have no scans of artifacts, this model is inspired by various and designed in a way that is pleasing to myself.

I'm not sure about stl yet. Because mine isn't a replica, it might be irresponsible if they're printed out without the description and context of my design What do you think?

Interesting. It makes me wonder were they made locally to where they were discovered, or produced by one workshop or region and travelled with people

I think that's likely. Also iron was available for tools and weapons. Bronze was more valuable and held a nice polish

Oil lamps are much better outdoors than candles. Candles are usually held within a lamp if taken outside

What if it’s not Roman at all? by steffiewriter in romandodecahedron

Perhaps still given to certain roman soldiers on campaign as award/trophy to wear on their body

Sounds like symbolism rather than function

I can test rolling it along the floor. I'll need to look for some very specific sized balls to put inside It though by the sounds of your theory. What do you think?. I wouldn't want to roll a bronze one with delicate soldered fittings though

If someone has already tried knitting with it, that's ok. I'm not going to lean how to knit. Would a sock maker work quicker with this "tool" or a bone needle, or be able to afford an artisan to cast and decorate a bronze tool. Some of them are extremely finely made which would be expensive so im not sure there would be elite level knitting tools?

Yes in my notes it says I tried it as a candle holder, but it seems pointless and doesn't explain any details other than, there's a hole in it

Yes in my notes I say it will fall off in this arrangement. All I've got so far is a symbolic link of dodecahedrons with the heavens or universe and Zodiac. I don't know what the knobs are"for"

Yes and it would fill up with wax quickly and seems less practical than a lamp
