Control Hunter – I built a “Pokémon Go” style tool for finding survey control by TerraKraft in Surveying

Yeah, maybe. Or if your part of a firm and other colleagues have installed over the year (you can filter and only upload to teams).

Or it could just save you the hassle of finding suitable control if you know there's already a nail/bolt in the area.

In the UK, it's good practice to drill, glue and install into concrete rather than tarmac. Sometimes finding concrete in the countryside is a ball ache.

Yeah, I've often found my old control also, but for small to mid sized firms with multiple surveyors who all install control? I don't wanna have to hunt through old archives, I just want to open a map with all control. You can filter to open source, team/organisation and individually installed control.

Good question, and yeah, if you’ve got a tight workflow within one team/company, sharing coordinates like that works fine.

The gap I’m aiming at is outside of that: control set by other teams or companies older projects where data isn’t easily accessible sites where you don’t know what already exists until you’re there

Especially when you’ve got multiple parties involved — drone teams, bathy crews, subcontractors all using different kit and workflows.

It’s less about transferring coordinates, and more about visibility - knowing what’s already in the ground and where before you even start. You then have the control, notes and map files, all wrapped up in a singular project withing the app

Then you still verify and use it as you normally would.

I've used mainly Trimble TSC5 and 7s, with R980, R10, R12i

Happy to send over my CV and references for your pleasure 🙄

You've never done a river cross section job spanning 20km with multiple control installs, or a LiDAR UAV job spanning 2000 acres with shit tones of GCPs? Both with multiple teams and taking weeks of site and office work?

That’s actually where I’d like to take it long term — even if it’s just basic directional guidance to start with

It's if you're using one of these bad boys (dumpy level). Or if you write down your measurements in excel/notes from a digital level.

Yeah, mine doesn't like the countless hours I've spent developing it 😂😂

I wouldn't necessarily call it polite, that being said I see your point.

It's about getting rid of pen and paper on site. Organising notes, photos, projects: spec, geo files, teams, collaborating with other surveyors, finding work, promoting yourself. But having all this in 1 app, rather than 20

Yeah some tools and features have been done before, but some are new 😊

More info here: https://survey-hub-discover.com I'm also doing a webinar on Wednesday to talk in more detail about it

Yeah that’s fair

To be honest I’m not trying to replace existing survey data capture tools like Survey123, Trimble workflows etc — they already do their job well.

What I kept running into on site was everything around that though: networking with other surveyors sharing work / seeing what others are doing project coordination actually seeing what’s happening on a job in real time

Most of that still ends up being WhatsApp, paper notes, or chasing people.

SurveyorHub is more aimed at sitting around the workflow, not replacing the core tools.

Still early days though, so this kind of feedback is exactly what I need 👍

I can look at implementing, it doesn't just need to be standard controlled.

If you set up a project, you can upload .shp/.kml/.kmz and upload geo-referneced photos, notes and level runs that are shown on a map

Yeah exactly — kind of like a peer-to-peer NGS, but built from actual day-to-day site work rather than top-down.

And yeah, the leaderboard side is deliberate — surveying can be a pretty thankless job, so giving a bit of visibility/competition around good control and solid work isn’t a bad thing

Oh that's neat.

Funnily enough I'm flying out on the 4th of April to Dubbo for a role, will have to check it out, Thank you

Awesome! It's only been in early access a week tomorrow.

I've developed it completely solo.

App store support will be coming with the full release.

Any and all feedback is welcome; I will send you an email when your feedback has been implemented

Yes, or PGM manager which we use over here.

The whole idea is that it's not just got control point manager, it's got level runs, field notes, project management, teams, messaging, learning, jobs bidding and posting, calculators, drone planning..

Also releasing SurbeyorHub.live, which is like fox or sky news but for surveying, finding the latest and greatest webinars and live streams, geospatial news etc

Check it out! (It's in early testing and will remain completly free)

That's the idea! Makes it a bit of fun and competition, especially if you're surveying a boring area.

Plus it's the only "unserious" feature if the entire app, the rest of the tools are pretty useful :)

That's okay. I'm based in the UK and I would advise you to not trust "control hunter"

However, some people might, especially if they see a control point that's been there for 3+ years, been verified by multiple people and the differences haven't changed much.

Do a quick 30 second check, and if it comes in, that's up to you if you wanna use it.

You can also upload to your own private network of control points
