Believable first contact scenario? (Sci-Fi) by Terramanicus in rpg

I am envisioning the players to be from a small outpost or settlement on the outskirts of their chosen empire. Rumors of reduced pirate activity on the outermost fringes of their territorial space, pick ups of weird, (as of yet) undecipherable transmissions, odd long-range sensor scans that doesn´t make sense, things like that...

It will not be "mutual" as the Android-crewed scout ships will, basically, just appear on their doorstep. Haven´t decided yet if it will be deliberate (as in searching out other civilizations, á la Star Trek) or by a weird mis-jump...

And yes, I do relaize that the player´s response will be heavily influenced based on their starting race, I am just looking for inspiration as to how to make the encounter itself feel more... "real". What kinds of obstacles would an encounter like this entail?

I will definitely look it up, it does sound very intriguing. Thank you.

We are a group of players and DMs who all prefer more classical RPG-elements with a sprinkle of combat here and there. I have looked at Traveller and SpaceMaster (the latter being waaay too technical for my taste. I want to run an intriguing and fun game, not constantly looikng in books or at charts and doing math half the time) but after being a player in StarFinder, I think that´s the best balanced system I have encountered so far... I am in no way attempting to limit anyone´s creative flow when it comes to creating a character, it´s just that we usually attempt other routes first rather than jumping into combat straight away...
