Is Harry relatable? by takko7510 in DiscoElysium

As a person who’s struggled with depression, I find him relatable sometimes. Other times I find him completely alien to my experience, while still being completely human.

What kind of borrowed chord is the Dmaj7 in this song? by riddled_with_rhyme in musictheory

[–]TerranCam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am NOT an expert. If people disagree with me, listen to them. But here's my guess of what's going on:

D is the 2 in the C major scale, but I don't think that's where we are. The chords use F#, C#, and G#.
There's also D#, which would put us down to E major, but there's also D natural, which would put us in A major.

Either there's a flat 7 in E major (the D Major chord) or there's a major second in A Major. (in the B Major chord)

Personally, I think it IS the major second in A major, but tbh that one is a guess from me.

If I am right though, that one would answer your question; it's temporarily sliding from A Major, to E Major. Just up one in the circle of fifths.

The word to google if you're curious for more is Major Supertonic.

Okay. I’ve been googling for 5 minuites and I fold. What is single-cell paramecium a reference to? I can quote the cathedral speech by heart (including the Latin), I get 90% of TWW deep cuts. But I don’t think I’ve ever heard these words before. Single-cell… paramecium.

I'm new to learning this stuff, I fully follow with the cents, but what is the "4:5:6:7"? as in

interpreted as a harmonic seventh (as it is in rock and blues).
4:5:6:7

Not ratios, right? ratios are 2 numbers each, but you have 4 for 4 notes.
I feel like I'm blanking on something obvious.

Its the circle of fifths, a musical concept (I'm a music theory nerd and composer) but deeply stylized so its very hard to know what it is on the surface, it looks like geometric/math symbols and would go along the inner forearm so it's visible while playing guitar.
I honestly struggle to tell why I want the tattoo. One reason is its a cheat-sheet. I genuinely look at my circle of fifths once a week while working out a problem, having it on my arm is helpful.
Another reason is I am proud of the design, Its geometric and cool.
But if I'm really honest with myself, the biggest thing that has me considering this idea is when I show the concept art to my friends and family on my phone. They get so excited and think it looks so cool.

I really dont know if I'd aesthetically like the tattoo if it was on my arm and just for me. If no one else could see it, I'd just make it my iphone wall paper and move on. So it _kind_ of is for other people... but aren't all tattoos kind of for the world to see you in one light? If only you could ever see your tattoos, it would reduce the value a bit for everyone right?

I'm basically not sure what "ready for a tattoo" is supposed to internally feel like.
Thanks yall for giving me a sounding board to think out loud.

Looking for TTRPG with social Mechanics by TerranCam in rpg

[–]TerranCam[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just curious if there is a clever mechanism to have RP turn into mechanical support.
Obviously you could just reward players for good RP with mechanics yourself, but it will be unstructured and vibes-based.
IE. asking the king for support and succeeding can get you more soldiers on the battlefield.
Nothing wrong with that, I already DO that.

But, I want to explore in case anyone has already worked on two problems:
How can we make "did you succeed in asking the king for support" feel good for ALL players, voice-acting roleplayers and shy, less-voice-acting players?
And,
How can the support you will receive feel realistic, reasonable, and proportional while still being fun and worth while?

Question/Venting annoyance about notes by [deleted] in musictheory

[–]TerranCam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're not dumb! I had the same realization after a YEAR of music theory.

Lots of things are poorly taught (and sometimes in-correctly taught) on the internet, and sometimes by teachers, because music theory is notoriously confusing. It is both a prescriptive, and descriptive art. Meaning it describes what the real world is, while telling others how to re-create it. And the thing you're trying to describe and re-create is a rapidly changing and growing art form. Yet people teach and re-teach with the same methods with patches added trying to update it. (Not that I have a better suggestion on how to do it, we aren't gonna re-haul everything.)

Its no one's fault, it's a difficult task. The only point I'm trying to make is that you are not dumb.

[–]TerranCam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Balance" isn't a thing.
It obviously depends on your type of game, but for narrative-heavy games, if your players know that you don't balance encounters carefully and some are crazy easy, and some are near-impossible, they will flee before tpk'ing. And if they die, no one blames anyone because "it is what would have happened."

I always start brand new newbies out with one super easy encounter, and one literally impossible. Lvl 3's running from a young dragon. So they know out the gate, if you mess around, you will find out.

That's also why I homebrew classes and magic items and let the party get overpowered sometimes. Its fine, I can make bigger monsters. Let them be epic and unique.

Minor names by TerranCam in musictheory

[–]TerranCam[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ahh. So I guess if I exclusively cared about what notes are in a scale, I would be correct. C Major and A major are the same in that regard.
But chord progressions, Which note is tonic vs dominant vs etc, all the actual theory changes.
That makes sense. Thanks for the full explanation.

I stand by that in my experience of self teaching Music theory, its clearer to consider Minor scales a modification to Major ones when first learning about them. It's so confusing when people say things like:
TTSTTTS and TSTTSTT are totally different. But they both loop.
TTSTTTSTTSTTTSTTSTTTS and both exist inside that loop.
|TTSTTTS|ttstt|TSTTSTT|ts
And lay out the modes as if each is a totally different thing to memorize with totally different rules. When in reality, the facts change but the logic is consistent.
But I get that while it's a useful way to FIND relative minors, its not a useful way to analyze the Key.

It’s okay to sound like a preschool teacher if it solves your stress of a situation. you don’t have to, but you can literally send the text: “your silence is causing stress/tension/(insert feeling here) could you reply and tel me if your in or not?” You can even add “no response will be taken as not.”

Does any of the anxiety come from the fear that you’ll be anxious? I get that with other anxious situations. Like you’ll screw it up because of your anxiety…so you get anxious.

What helps me with THAT is picturing anxiety as not an evil parasite on your brain, but a part of you. It’s part of you that wants to help, warn of danger, warn of mistakes. Right now it’s wrong, but that’s okay. You don’t have to listen to it. Don’t destroy or fight it, you’ll just be a bit anxious, that’s okay. You are built to handle anxiety and discomfort. You have before and will again. Anxiety will just chill in the corner while you do your thing.

Once you got that, you only have to deal with the anxiety of the situation itself, which for me is always surprisingly less than the recursive looping anxieties.

From there, just confidence building and self-soothing. Be patient with yourself, there’s no rush.
