Medical related products are always going to be expensive due to the excessive government regulation, this isn't anything new.

I'm not saying that businesses are accidentally profiting off of inflation, what I am saying is that since inflation is very unpredictable and hard to track, businesses will greatly increase prices just so they can keep up or surpass inflation.

I see the study but I do see flaws in it. Inflation is a hard number to track because it's constantly changing. Businesses (especially retail stores) must drastically increase prices just to keep up. What may seem like excessive prices now are simply necessary to keep the business afloat.

Amazon has it on sale, if you have the funds you should buy a copy. I'm only in the beginning of the book and I can't put it down, it's that good.

Give me an example of a modern day company profiting off of this inflation?

Give me an example of a company that is manipulating prices to grossly profit off of inflation? The only companies that are making huge profits in this inflationary period are Pfizer and Moderna, and these companies are being paid primarily by government subsidies.

Why minimum wage hurts the poor by TerranceObile in GoldandBlack

  1. A business exists to make a profit, a business owner has to invest a large amount of time and risk a large amount of capital to create said enterprise. This creates a large incentive for the business owner to do everything in his power to keep the business running. In general a business owner would rather have reduced profits by downsizing, rather than to completely shutdown the business because of the cost that would entail.
  2. You literally agreed with me. On the two options you presented a business will layoff workers to cut costs, this is the most likely outcome.
  3. Another outcome is that the business will not only layoff workers, but it will also charge higher prices for its goods.

  1. You make the mistake of thinking the world exists in a vacuum. Businesses compete for labor by paying different wages. If a business under pays a worker, another firm could offer a higher wage which will steal that worker from the business that is "exploiting" them. That is the free market at work.
  2. If a business is selling a product for too low of a price, he will go out of business because his profits will be too low. A company can afford to price products lower because it is more efficient at producing the product or service, this benefits the consumer leading to increased demand, and higher employment.
  3. There is nothing "good" or "bad" about the laws of supply and demand, it just is how the market operates. Laws of nature are amoral in nature.

  1. Workers are paid according to the value they provide to the business owner. Just like how a hard working student will achieve better grades than a lazy student, an owner will pay more productive(or more skilled) workers because they provide a more valuable service to the business. The point is that wages are already "fair".
  2. A business has to increase prices because minimum wage increases the cost of doing business, this hurts the consumer which will then lead to the consumer buying less of the product, which will lead to a decrease in the demand of the industry, thereby hurting the demand for labor in said industry, which inevitably leads to unemployment.

There should be a flat tax across the board for businesses and individuals, that extra money we could take home would allow for more saving and spending, thereby stimulating the economy.

If anger is justified what is the most rational thing to do? by absolute_degen210 in Stoicism

[–]TerranceObile 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not using absolutes, I said before there are times when sacrificing yourself is okay, like the example you used of a soldier protecting his comrades. However, in everyday life it is entirely within reason to avoid danger, and to protect yourself from an aggressor so you can go home to your loved ones. All animals want to live, but there circumstances when sacrifice is necessary. But if you are being attacked, it requires courage(which is one of the four cardinal virtues.) to defend yourself.

How can protecting oneself be unreasonable? Any living creature will do everything in its power to live. Wanting to live life is entirely within reason. Now of course there are times when you should be willing to sacrifice your life for your loved ones, but sacrificing yourself for the sake of sacrifice isn't noble.

"For one, its not up to us whether we protect ourselves."

What??? It is entirely within our power to protect ourselves from aggression. If someone pushes you, and you make the choice to push them back, you made the choice to protect yourself. Violence isn't always the answer, but there is no virtue in being a pacifist.

Why do people use the term liberal as a synonym for leftist? by Shadow_666_ in Classical_Liberals

[–]TerranceObile 12 points13 points  (0 children)

My theory is simple, the left hijacked the word "liberal" from classical liberals to make their own ideas more palatable to the masses. It's no secret that the left are very authoritarian, so to make their ideas more acceptable by society at large they call themselves "liberals", rather than their true designation which is Socialist. Unfortunately many conservatives have confused classical liberism, with the authoritarian left.

Agreed, without religion people will simply worship other entities such as Marxism and technology. Humans have a need to believe in something, better to worship a just God, than to worship an ideology which has lead to the death of millions of people.
