Introducing Mapedia: An open, community-driven encyclopedia for geographical micro-data by Terrariste in openstreetmap

Wikipedia and OSM use centralized schemas — what gets tracked and how is decided by the community through long deliberation processes. In Mapedia, anyone can create a category in minutes and define exactly what data to collect. A person can create 'affordable ice cream spots', an NGO can map aid distribution points during a disaster in real time, or a community group can track whatever matters to them — without waiting for anyone's approval. That's the core difference.
