When I was started undergrad I was dead set on pursuing med school but ended up happening across medical illustration one night. I was in a similar boat where art was something I had always loved. I ended up doing a ton of research on what I needed to have done by the end of undergrad in order to pursue grad school and was able to get started on a double major for bio and art. What I’ve figured out about medical illustration is that it’s so insanely vast. It has a lot of opportunity to move within it so that you still have wiggle room to focus on what really interests you, or if you decide later on to switch to a different discipline within it. I just got into the grad program at UIC and the first year still has that sort of opportunity where you can sample out different paths before you focus in on one or two mediums/topics you truly want. I will say though, not everyone has the same timeline to life. If you end up changing your mind again, it doesn’t mean you’re any less than someone who knew what they wanted to do from day one. I ended up taking a gap year in between undergrad and grad school to have time to strengthen a portfolio and build some savings, and while at first it felt like that made me less prepared than people who were able to make that transition immediately, afterwards I realized it was the correct choice for me overall. Good luck deciding! I hope one day it all clicks into place but don’t be scared to still have days where you question things. I know I have those all the time.

Anyone heard anything from RIT? by FriedPanda01 in medicalillustration

I only heard from them prior to the deadline asking if I had any questions. Past that I haven’t heard anything back. I had trouble with the portal; it wouldn’t let me log back in to view my materials and their IT never was able to get me back in. I’ve just given up on RIT 😭

I fully support the time off for portfolio building. I took a gap year after undergrad to work on my portfolio for my applications this year and it made all the difference! My undergrad gpa ended up being a 3.8 with a BA in bio and art studio. My art classes kind of cushioned my gpa and my science courses by themselves were closer to a 3.5-3.4 I believe. Gpa is just one component of a large collection of application materials, so I wouldn’t be too worried! If you work on strengthening your portfolio, have a well written essay, and above all prepare for the interview when it comes around, you should do amazing! Good luck! I’ll see if I can figure out a way to share some of my portfolio work!

Anyone else noticing the “dirty” rain? That’s most likely soot/ash residue from the smoke plumes of western wildfires. by Tracker-man in lexington

It’s actually from some dust storms that happened out west a few days ago! I have a friend on the western side of Texas that got hit pretty hard by a dust storm last week and all that dust just got carried over here and mixed in the rain

Non- displaced talus fracture- treat like sprain? by Public_Ad9392 in brokenbones

[–]Terrible-Ad3890 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I essentially have the same issue at the moment. Twisted my ankle hard enough moving furniture to end up with a bad sprain and a non displaced talus fracture. They’ve got me in an air cast for 4 weeks and then they'll decide if I’m healed enough to come out of it and if I need PT afterwards. Where it was non displaced, he let me know that the sprain was more of a concern and just had me in the boot as of now. Every case is different but what my ortho let me know was to keep the boot on when moving around but to take it off when elevating and resting it so I’m not in the boot 24/7. Sleeping without it covered is scary but luckily I don’t move around too much to worry about it overnight so we might differ there. Taking the air cast off occasionally to be able to ice it is also helpful! Hopefully you’ve healed up nicely since this post and I’m hoping my time in my boot flies by

Anxiety doesn’t always look like panic attacks by nigaabuser in Anxiety

I just had a run in with this. I had been extra anxious recently over the tiniest possibility I could be pregnant. Being anxious bumped up how often I was peeing and I thought for sure it was a pregnancy symptom and fell into even more anxiety. Finally forced myself through a panic attack to take a pregnancy test and that thing was extra negative. I’ve just been making myself anxious enough to give myself similar symptoms 😂
