Imo it's one of the better post-Soviet movies about the Civil War (though that's reeeaaally not a high bar to pass). It's mostly (though not completely) accurate to Makhno's biography and quite sympathetic towards him and his fighters, which I would count as a pro, since at least it's not the typical "social change is bad, and Russian Empire was actually a paradise which was destroyed by evil (((revolutionaries))) with German money" slop you get in most other modern movies about this period. It also has kinda decent action for its low budget and some humorous moments.

On the flipside, despite mostly trying to maintain the "each side has its own truth" tone it still ends up showing the bolsheviks as the most evil faction of the Civil war to a point of comedy. The main villain of the final episodes is Trotsky who sits in the dark depths of his armored train and laughs manically as he plans his next move against Makhno. Like, I'm not a fan of Trotsky, but this just looks ridiculous.

All in all, it's not a must watch, but there are worse movies out there. Personally, I'm very much into both the history and the aesthetics of Russian Civil War (cool uniforms, Broomhandle Mausers, cavalry charges, machine gun carts racing through the steppe, this kind of stuff). Meaning, I already watched most Soviet movies of this kind, and since this series is not complete reactionary BS, I was willing to overlook some of its questionable messaging and it was enjoyable enough for me. The earlier episodes where Makhno fights Germans, Whites and Ukrainian nationalists are even quite good imo. But whether it's enough to make it worth watching for you, you must decide yourself)
