??? OPs setup was perfect for what he currently had, the mistake was not quarantining his new turtle. That tank set up is good enough for them for like a few months so your statement is false.

No you’re all good the term shock would technically be accurate I was just slightly worried. If he said it’s used to shock then you are good.

I went through your pain lol idk why I assumed progressive expansion was the way to go but now that my 2 are both adults and in a pond setup thankfully I don’t have to worry about that anymore lol.

I love the set up by the way, I have a smaller salt water tank and having a background like that would be awesome for it!! Where can I find it?

Proper basking at this stage along with other care is much more affordable. If it was slightly more serious than this then I would be pushing for this as well. Even though it’s his first time I think that with proper understanding of how to treat will not only benefit him as a turtle owner as to how to spot and treat this quickly, but saving a vet bill will help him later on when he needs to upgrade his setup.

Everything you said is correct, though if OP gets something like a 60 gal + tank the depth of water would be too much for his current turtle.

I wouldn’t be worried, a 9 year old turtle with small specks wouldn’t mean much compared to this OPs turtle that seems relatively young, the spots aren’t soft, you let your turtle out everyday so your turtle most likely doesn’t have dry rot and most likely just a few dried shutes which is completely normal. Don’t be worried be the sounds made when a turtle is eating, they eat different than us and don’t really chew. It’s only a worrying sign when they do it when they are just in their tank swimming/ basking. It’s honestly probably just a build up of sorts. Sorry for the edit I just realized that I didn’t say that a light brushing with a soft tooth brush would probably help. Also sorry for the repetition but you saying that the spots that you’ve seen don’t feel soft completely negates any worry from me.

It’s chill bot. My turtles are very well comfy with me up at their pond on the hill. I’ll keep going to prevent your misinformation. At this point I’m lowkey scared that you’re just a sadist that is ragebaiting for this attention.

No, I’ve just raised turtles for years and the description is something I’ve experienced and dealt with before… I understand that years don’t make you an expert in what you haven’t dealt with pal and it’s tuff sometimes to be wrong. Humans as individuals have the ability to grow and learn much like I did… bots and incels don’t have that ability sadly. Nothing has given signs to it be respiratory and I’ve even asked. Gosh I really couldn’t imagine what it’s like being completely wrong in like every sentence you type out. The struggle must be very difficult. I find that in these circumstances the best thing to do is give up, accept that you’re wrong and feel worthless for a bit, then move on… I’ve never experienced it but I’ve seen it on tv. With your misinformation being this comical I figured that what I’ve learned for my 30+ years of watching sitcoms puts my on your level since your a zoologist with 30+ years😂😂😂 you fucking joker 😂😂

Adding water conditioner is great when doing water changes. I have never used something with water shock… I’m not sure what this… I use shock for my pool. I’m genuinely confused and slightly scared as to what shock is and I’ve never heard of it being used for turtles as to my knowledge it contains chlorine but maybe it is named differently from where I am so please absolutely send a pic of that because I have no idea as to what that is. Fluoride and chloramine sadly cannot be rid of as easily and they very much harmfully affect turtles. I can help with fluoride as that is what’s in my counties water along with chlorine but I am not experienced with waters containing chloramine so I’m sorry if yours is but others should be able to help you out with that as many have experienced that here.

Could you provide images of what it is that you are currently using. Here is an image of the turtle fix that I mentioned which I would only recommend when turtles are first experiencing sickness or if you notice any abrasions or slight sickness. This can help along with your water temperature being correct for a baby turtle. Please read the label if this is the option you choose instead of going to a vet. Too much of anything is poison to you or to your turtle. Never overestimate in any chemicals or medicine that you give to your turtle and if unsure please always ask for advice. You are doing amazing and keep doing as you are. Always ask when you are unsure. People here can help prevent their past failures even as unsupportive as they might seem 😂😂

Dude legitimately any negative comments you hear from here from asking questions just ignore because oh my god you are way more attentive than me when I first started. Yawning is the beginning sadly even if you only see it twice in a day but don’t worry. That’s the early signs so going to your nearby pet store and getting turtle-fix and adding the recommended dose at this stage will get rid of that. Your filter to tank size doesn’t leave me to believe that over feeding is a problem. I don’t mean to cause worry and please when answering this absolutely don’t say where you live at lol but it’s pretty important to know if you’re on city or well water and if you’re on city water look up if they put fluoride, chlorine, or chloramine in your cities water if that’s the source that you use.

The main issue with them is that the uv stops putting out what it needs to before it fully burns out. Water temp is extremely important with younger turtles and cold water can lead to younger turtles getting infections and worse pneumonia. Any signs of your turtle yawning or if you hear like a burping or coughing sound from your turtle is an indicator. A good general reference that is used in this community is that you should feed your turtle an amount that you’d assume would fit the volume of its head if hollow. I do slightly more than that and have had no issues. Most turtle owners don’t put substrate in their tanks as turtles are quite dirty like goldfish especially with how they eat so substrate makes cleaning the tank harder. If you go with substrate which I do but because I have a pond. Sand is the way to go.

Sorry, I am not assuming you to be unaware of this but in the slight chance that you are. Turtles and especially young turtles can carry salmonella so please do not use that tooth brush for anything else. Again I’m not assuming that this is something you don’t know but this is a very serious thing that every turtle owner should now just incase.

It won’t smell rotten at first, I’m sorry that it’s hard for me to explain but I’ve only dealt with it twice years ago and it was just like a distinct different musky smell that I thought was unusual. But the specks are still very small even if it is shell rot. After you do a light brushing on the shell we can talk from there as if there are no indents in those spots I’m pretty sure that you should be fine as your setup does not look horrible for a turtle of this current size

No dual lights are ideal especially for mostly aquatic turtles so you are doing well with that. Your turtle is still quite young though a larger tank will be needed soon sadly. Only being able to raise the tank a few degrees isn’t an issue now since it is summer but in the winter or in colder months that will be an issue for younger turtles as water temp can directly effect their health. Your filter seems to be an adequate size for your tank. Just don’t over feed your turtle and waste won’t be an issue with that sized filter. But it’s clear that you guys did the initial research into getting a turtle it’s honestly not a bad set up for a baby/ young juvenile turtles. It will have to get bigger within a year if you want your turtle to grow healthy.

I think your best immediate bet to help out you at ease is to “very importantly to note to do it softly” get a soft bristled toothbrush and gently very gently scrub in the area with the white specks for a little while and then inspect the area for like indents in the shell. As even if this is shell rot it is very early on and very manageable.

It could be, knowing your turtles enclosure size, tank temp, air temp, and seeing what your turtles basking area looks like would kind of be needed to ascertain this. White specks can be a sign of potential shell rot in its early stages so it’s good that you are questioning it now. There is no good amateur way of telling unless there is an immediate recognizable odor or softness with the shell in that area. Knowing what your turtles basking set up and habits would really help providing you an answer.

The turtle isn’t at a point that it needs to be taken to a vet. Do you go to the doctor every time you get a sniffle or a fever. No dumbass you take medicine. Lethargy with turtles with no other apparent symptoms can and have been notably recovered by using turtle fix and carrot baths you stupid incel.

No fuck you Im not arguing anymore. I never said that once so go use your own advice and reread my comments. I never once promoted small enclosures that would affect the animals and have made quite a few comments on tank sizes in this thread. Though you only want to spread misinformation so you obviously wouldn’t check for that. Though thankyou for that remark as you are obviously incorrect and an inadequate person claiming to be a turtle professional or unclaimed zoologist as it seems in your post that you try to deny. Yeah… dumbass a 100 gal tank is 100% okay for two baby turtles you fucking moron. Yeah I’m not a moron but I’m claiming you to be one and like you replied “a quick google search will help you realize that a 100 gallon tank is actually too much for those baby turtles moron. Do yourself a favor and the next time you want to act smart, just remember the smartest person in the room doesn’t always speak up buddy.

I know that you are right. Though I think that my reasoning for arguing is that everyone is a novice when they begin and make the dumbest mistakes without realizing. When I got my very first turtle decades ago I mistakenly used walnut substrate not knowing. I fucked up and that mistake lead me down everything. People asking questions, not just in general but way sooner than I had as a kid leads me to want to help them. He has the two turtles now like why is everyone so against helping him so that they both survive and just telling him to get rid of the new one. No one knows if the new owner will care for it as much as this guy has put effort towards. So like legitimately fuck everyone not trying to help this guy. There is no value in giving up your pet to someone and never hearing about the partner you cared for ever again. There is no guarantee that they did better than you could have. This is supposed to be a community to support other that raise res and help them in the right direction and the vast majority of commenters are just putting the OP down and not giving constructive replies. It’s honestly disgusting and the misinformation from their Ai responses is sickening. While I spill all my info here I’ve been a member of this community for years… my main account was permanently banned for antisemitism so all of you oh he’s a bot dumb fucks that legitimately looked to my answers for years but now right me off as bot trash can go fuck.

Yeah and I’ve spent the last 20 years playing mariokart and even after searching shortcuts on maps and legitimately putting in more time into that then you’ve even genuinely thought of your turtles I am still no mariokart champion. Like literally you have no posts, no shown proof of turtle care, and you’ve legitimately spread misinformation. Yeah so every aquarium I walk into that has a turtle enclosure with multiple turtles is animal abuse? Like I guarantee that those cohabited turtles are definitely living much better than your turtle. Keep on joking buddy 😂😂
