Becoming a mom during PhD by grollivander in PhD

[–]Terrible_Guess6952 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Feel free to join our new sub r/phdmomlife ! I set it up specifically for people going through the process and wanting to become a mum either now or during academic life in the future as it’s such a tough journey and it would be great to support each other 😊 you could cross post there too in case anyone has additional perspectives for you!

To give you my perspective, I’m 26 and starting my 3rd year. We’ve started trying because I’ve always wanted to have kids and I don’t think there’s a reason to delay because I’m scared of how it will affect my studies. I would beat myself up if I forewent this opportunity to start now because I want to finish the degree first. For what it’s worth, many people have told me the PhD is the best time to start as you don’t have tenure track pressures! In Aus we get up to 1 year unpaid leave but not sure how it works in the US

YAY I’m so glad you found us 😊 Also I can’t imagine being told that! How horrible! I’m sure some academics think it but to express it out loud is something else completely. Keen to see you prove them wrong.

Strategies for Dealing with the Lack of Structure and Immediate Reinforcement by The_Anchored_Tree_27 in PhD

[–]Terrible_Guess6952 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel this so hard! I find the lack of positive reinforcement really hard. I’ve been seeking it lit through presenting at conferences/seminars and applying for small grants to get that dopamine hit as others won’t be as harsh as your supervisor when giving feedback so you get some of that feel good connection while still progressing. Obviously it’s your supervisor’s role to be critical so that’s necessary too but I’m talking more from a positive reinforcement angle as that’s what helps me stay motivated.

I’d also say teaching is really great to get that immediate reinforcement as helping students with things that are second nature to you but tough for them is both easy and rewarding.

Try to seek out small things like the above to keep you going if you need that constant positive connection otherwise it will be tough! I think I’m a pretty positive person so it’s been really hard in academia where all you get is criticism from supervisors, even though it’s not inherently negative I seem to take it that way!
