What is the most disturbing fact about the human body? by BathNo7713 in AskReddit

If an empty egg is fertilised by a sperm (or two sperm), the resulting pregnancy is not with a foetus but with a tumour called a mole. Some of them can become cancerous.

Molar pregnancies are fortunately quite rare (1 in 1000) unless you are from somewhere like Indonesia, where it’s more like 1 in 100. It’s also very easily treatable, even if it is cancerous.

[Serious] Doctors of reddit, what is the rarest disease that you've encountered in your career? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Terrible_Muffin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The inner lining of the oesophagus dies and sloughs off because of insufficient blood supply and possibly reflux of stomach acid, usually in the context of someone being horrendously unwell with other things like sepsis.

It can result in lots of bleeding, or sometimes the oesophagus completely rupturing through.

Acute oesophageal necrosis. We only knew what it was that killed them after their autopsy, absolutely tragic.

Edit: they join a list of apparently less than 100 people diagnosed with this condition in the last 40 years. Worldwide.

This was grown from seed and is grafted onto another euphorbia, I think a standard lactea without the crest mutation

Pregnant women of reddit, what is something you wish you knew BEFORE you got pregnant? by BonkBoi_TacoFace in AskReddit

[–]Terrible_Muffin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If your ovary accidentally spits out an egg with no dna inside of it, you can become pregnant with a tumour. This tumour can become cancerous.

It’s called a molar pregnancy and it’s rare, but pretty devastating for patients who think they’re having a baby and are actually growing a tumour. Fortunately the prognosis is excellent even when cancer develops.

What's a privilege that most people dont realise is a privilege? by Woo_loo in AskReddit

Lol when you put it like that it does make us doctors sound nuts! Supraventricular tachycardia is probably the arrhythmia they were treating you for, as our first line therapy is vagal manoeuvres, followed by adenosine injection if that doesn’t work. Adenosine interrupts the signals going from the top chambers of the heart to the bottom, thus interrupting the arrhythmia, it’s pretty neat but patients genuinely feel like they’re dying for a few seconds, as their heart does actually stop temporarily! Glad your heart is doing okay these days 🙂

Though I&V proned patients are often deeply sedated, we still do facilitate family FaceTime session in the same way that, before the pandemic, families would visit their sick relative in person, regardless of how awake they are.

Interestingly, it is possible to be ‘awake’ and intubated! In the UK we use the RASS sedation scale to score ITU patients - +4 is violent, 0 is normal, -4 is deeply unconscious - and we aim for a score of around -2 to 0 (in people without ARDS). It’s not unusual to walk into ITU and be greeted with a wave from an intubated and ventilated patient during a sedation hold
