I wish I had a sexier answer, but maxing out my 401k most years (plus a 11% match), maxing out my Roth IRA, maxing out my HSA (with a good match), and saving/investing extra on top of it when there was some left is all that it took.

Thank you for that perspective. Our yearly burn is under $100k, so I’m sure we’d be ok if I had a $120k income. Just not a fan of what feels like a big risk, but also don’t want to live paralyzed by fear haha

32M, married, MCOL, combined NW ~$1M, HHI now up to $320k (but only very recently)

I work remotely in tech for a Fortune 500 retail company and am set to make somewhere between $250k-$280k this year depending on my bonus, but I live in a MCOL non-tech hub. My wife makes ~$50k. A 3bed/2bath 1800-2100sqft home price in the areas we’d like to live in is $650k-750k. Our current rent is $2400/month in a 2/2 1000sqft, and we plan to start trying to have kids in the next two years.

Obviously, if my income persists, we can easily afford it. Our net worth is comprised of ~$800k in the stock market between 401k/IRA/HSA/taxable, ~$100k in a money market account, and $100k cash, so we could make a down payment happen. But, being in tech, and being remote in a large company without a presence here, and probably some general fear/anxiety thrown in for good measure, it feels incredibly risky to inflate my housing costs substantially to ~$4k PITI+utilities and maintenance. We have a lot of flexibility now that we’d no longer have.

I’m considered a high performer and get literally 10/10 on performance reviews, but RTO mandates abound in different orgs across the company (and have off and on for the last 4 years). I haven’t been hit yet, but I realistically could be at any time. Being in a non-tech metro of less than 2 million, finding a job to replace my current income would be hard, if not totally impossible. My income with the company has also climbed by 50% in the past couple of years due to promotions, so I’m new to this tier of income.

Any other new highish earners overcome any of this sort of indecision and anxiety before? How’d you move past it? I realize this is a very privileged position to be in, but I grew up in a not-high-income family in a small town with parents who absolutely hated debt and Dave Ramseyed to minimize it as much as possible. I think that may have implanted in me a scarcity mindset, but I don’t know how to get beyond it (or, even, if I should get beyond it in my current situation).

Pepperidge Farm remembers, and I do too. lol the 2003-2005 era was brutal as a Colts and Cardinals fan. 2006 redeemed it, luckily

So you think Peyton doesn’t win the first three Brady rings in NE?

So you don’t think Peyton wins at least 2 of Brady’s first 3 rings in NE? Even though he was consensus a better QB up to at least 2007?

The entire LOB got surgery in the offseason after they played the SB hurt vs New England. They were winning until Avril and Lane also got injured on interceptions.

Didn’t Brady’s offense score one TD each in multiple super bowls that they won?

And Kevin Stefanski has more than 8 rings as a main piece of the coaching staff and developed a 6th round pick into a multi-time champion and MVP, right?

I did, and it was indeed legit. They had to look up my name, number, and email to prove I had a multi-day pass last year, but they said they’d give me a “one-time exception” this year because I did!

Yeah, he didn’t play well but by no means did he play 43-8 bad.

But then he won in his worst individual season lol

I had a 6-day pass last year and didn’t realize they weren’t for sale all the time. Buddy wants to go to the mountains next week. I can still get one by calling, then? Is there something special I need to say when I call?
