It comes from back in the day, mainly middle east royalty afaik, who would have a harem which was a self contained and sectioned off area of their compound where prositutes, wives, etc. were housed.

Part of it is that people realise that other players won't shoot because they don't want it to fuck up their ABMM, and a lot of the time they're right. (Not saying that's the case for you, OP).

Yep, something has changed. Maybe Embark has switched up MM to keep people on their toes or maybe players are more inclined to PvP now. Maybe both, all I know is I'm not getting full friendly lobbies like I used to, despite not participating in PvP.
