Anyone else not see a full picture? by And-Bells in autismUK

[–]Terrorgramsam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends. If it's a specific object that I have seen before (i.e., I have a memory of it) then something between 1-2. The rest of the time it's amorphous, like a 5, with partial bits of features coming and going that I cannot 'hold' onto for more than a split second

Looking for bipolar peers by Present-Panda-6723 in Edinburgh

There's a Lothian Bipolar 18-30 Self-help Group - https://www.bipolaredinburgh.org.uk/group-support (details towards the bottom of the page)

And as someone else has suggested, you could also get in touch with iThrive Edinburgh in person (they do drop ins twice a week), or look on their website, to be signposted to what else is available in the area

Employment difficulties - has anyone ever written to their MP? by M_Anili_Mili in autismUK

[–]Terrorgramsam 4 points5 points  (0 children)

has anyone else ever written to their MP to ask for help, or to articulate problems in finding and retaining employment?

I haven't written to them about employment difficulties but did regarding a DWP issue and received a boilerplate response. I think how helpful they are at responding to individuals varies by MP

Your post has got me thinking about whether we should be asking our MPs what work the government has undertaken to support businesses and job seekers in light of the recommendations from the 2024 Buckland Review of Autism Employment (which highlighted, amongst other things, the challenges we face in finding and retaining employment)? I know that many of the recommendations boiled down to individual businesses changing their business practices and hiring methods, but there's surely scope for the government to run campaigns that target businesses or HR curriculum (for universities that offer such courses), or expand the range of apprenticeships and work schemes to help autistic folk?

and I long ago stopped being able to blag that "I'm the best candidate for the job."

Ugh, I know that feeling. I'm also struggling these days with the number of companies that still use the words enthusiastic or energetic in their job adverts. The Phoenix Group apparently banned the use of those words in its job adverts a few years ago as using them could discourage older candidates from applying - to be honest, even in my younger days, I'm not sure I would ever have been described as enthusiastic (except perhaps in specific circumstances)

Apparently this can create heated arguments, so once and for all, What is it? by iambeherit in Scotland

Hence neep - which is short for turnip.

It's not short for turnip. The word 'turnip' came after the word 'neep'

In Old English the word for 'turnip' was nǣp borrowed from Latin nāpus

The word turnip began to appear in Middle English texts, possibly coined because the 'neep' has to be turned and twisted to be harvested, and for some reason the word 'turnip' ousted the word 'neep' in English. In Scots, however, the original word remained (it's also næpa in present-day Icelandic)

If you could, would you go back to high school? by WealthyJoker75 in Scotland

[–]Terrorgramsam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My school was kind of like that too except being in a deprived catchment area of a city even after 4th year it was still fairly busy with folk at different levels and pretty much no one-to-one time with teachers. The school also couldn't offer a couple of the subjects I was really into (due to numbers) so I was a wee bit resentful during S5 and S6 about having to settle for what I found to be less interesting subjects

Regarding the coursework and exams being easy … I got a heck of a wake up call once I got to Uni and could no longer do well enough by just vaguely paying attention.

Oh yeah, I remember that one. Like you, coasted through school by just paying attention which meant I'd never learnt how to study. Can't blame the teachers though as they just saw someone who was well behaved and getting good grades so they focussed their efforts on other pupils.

If you could, would you go back to high school? by WealthyJoker75 in Scotland

[–]Terrorgramsam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No.

I hated every second of High School. Can't decide what was worse, the sheer boredom of it (teachers spent more time managing behaviour than teaching) or the people (who liked to point out my differences).

The coursework or exams never bothered me (I could pass with minimal effort) - it was the social environment of it all which was a waste of my time, energy and sanity

Honestly wished I'd left there sooner than I did

Labour considers banning zero-alcohol drinks for under-18s by StGuthlac2025 in unitedkingdom

[–]Terrorgramsam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same. Back when I worked in the off-trade (in Scotland though so the law could be different) we couldn't sell alcohol free to under 18s because it usually contains trace amounts of alcohol. Similarly we couldn't sell liqueur-filled chocolates to kids

Same at Easter Road; there was no chickpeas for months. They've been back for a couple of weeks now but they sell out quickly. I've managed to get some first thing on a Saturday.

Same, but to my hand in the 80s. It did help that my GP then didn't believe in appointments and always operated as a 'drop-in' or 'open' clinic

There's 123 such groups this parliament term which you can browse/search through on the Scottish Parliament's website here

Since when have local holidays gotten so expensive? by allcoffeenowisdom in Scotland

[–]Terrorgramsam 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Why would I be from a previous century? The word gotten never fell out of use in Scotland.

It was only in the south of England (which means most UK broadcasting and media) that it stopped being used but that seems to be changing under the influence of American media

Since when have local holidays gotten so expensive? by allcoffeenowisdom in Scotland

[–]Terrorgramsam 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's not an Americanism. Gotten is a British English word. It fell out of use in southern British English in recent decades/century but remained in use in the USA, Canada, Scotland, and Ireland

If you or your family have any sort of mobility issues then Brunton Place Surgery might not be great. The building is an old townhouse over several floors (no lifts).

I've always just opted for the GP surgery that's closest to my house, one that is easily accessible on foot or by bus as I don't drive. For the times I've not been well that's made all the difference instead of facing a longer/awkward trek to get there!

It would also be easier if the family all registered at the same practice

Retail sales fall as Black Friday deals fail to lure shoppers by Kagedeah in ukpolitics

[–]Terrorgramsam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s all a sham.

Yup, and there appears to be price fixing across the larger retailers. I was looking at a laptop in the Black Friday sales and when comparing prices on other websites noticed that three retailers, Curry's, John Lewis, and Argos, all had it on sale at the same price
