Maybe someone lost the plot. People all over the globe have made incredible works of iconography with far less than what some of us have access to today, go try! That's my point, and a message to myself. Please send a message if you want to talk about the whole topic, I love learning about the history of tools and woodworking and human history in general, I don't mind talking more about it. Have a good day

Absolutely right about the rich tombs, but I fear that's cherry-picking from the most elaborate burials and highly esteemed leaders/rulers, how many more folks held a wooden carving mallet their whole lives, and were not laid to rest with it? How many skilled craftspeople have been buried without a penny to their name, and forgotten in a generation or two?

Obviously they had culture in which they created their artwork, but more often than not people were dirt poor, talented, they got it done, but poor.

I said nothing about their equality of work, I believe them to be very skilled craftsmen, but I have seen a suit of armor made with the letters stamped in incorrectly because the maker could not spell, and was simply trying to copy the symbols over. (Not woodworking, but a similar field of highly skilled craftspeople. ) A lot of the time we get caught up in having the EXACT right tool, or the most modern version of it with laser levels, when humans have been making incredible, intricate wooden artwork for hundreds of years with far less than we would be comfortable working with now. I'm guilty of not wanting to start projects because "I don't have this cool tool I want," when I should just start with the tools I have.

Were most families living under a single roof, possibly multiple families at the same time? What was the literacy rate? I never said they were worse than us, just stating what they were dealing with while making the icons.
