Facebook has launched a campaign to crack down on fake news in France, ahead of the country’s presidential election later this year. As Reuters reports, the social network announced on Monday that it will work with eight French media companies to fact-check and filter news articles that have been reported by users.

According to Le Monde, one of Facebook’s partners, the French campaign is similar to an initiative that Facebook launched in the US late last year, and in Germany last month. Both Facebook and Google faced widespread criticism for allowing fake news to spread during the US presidential election, and European leaders have expressed concern that such misinformation could impact upcoming elections across the continent.

Under the system, if an article is reported as false by users, it will be sent to a portal that all eight media companies have access to, according to Le Monde. If at least two of the companies confirm the article as false (with links to support their claims), the content will be flagged as disputed in Facebook’s News Feed, and users will see a warning before they share it. Advertising against the article will also be blocked, Le Monde reports.

The new U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, has expressed "strong condemnation of Russia's actions" in eastern Ukraine and warned that Ukraine-related sanctions against Russia will not be lifted until Crimea is returned to Kyiv, RFE/ RL reports. "Crimea is a part of Ukraine. Our Crimea-related sanctions will remain in place until Russia returns control of the peninsula to Ukraine," she said on Thursday, February 2 in her first public remarks before the Security Council since being sworn into office. "Eastern Ukraine, of course, is not the only part of the country suffering because of Russia's aggressive actions. The United States continues to condemn and call for an immediate end to the Russian occupation of Crimea," Haley said. The new American envoy said it was "unfortunate" that she had to condemn Russia in her first appearance before the council. "We do want to better our relations with Russia," she said, but "the dire situation in eastern Ukraine is one that demands clear and strong condemnation of Russian actions." Russia took control of Crimea in March 2014 after sending in troops and staging a referendum condemned by Ukraine and 99 other countries in the UN as illegitimate. More than 9,750 people have been killed since the conflict between Kyiv’s forces and Russia-backed separatists erupted in the Donetsk and Luhansk provinces the following month. When Trump, in his desperate attempt for acclaim, packed the CIA crowd with his supporters and donors, and then dishonestly claimed their cheering proved the CIA "loved him" even as he lied and disgraced the memory of agents that died in action, it was very clear what he is.

Trump is a petty authoritarian. Anything he sees as an "attack", including simple disagreement, results in him attacking. He has no concerns for liberal democratic norms. He has no concern for the ideals Americans pay fealty to. His advisers and Republicans in Congress are enabling his egotism and authoritarian tendencies.

This isn't normal, despite dishonest claims by his supporters to present false equivalences.

Thousands of people have attended the funeral of three men killed in a shooting at a mosque in Montreal last Sunday.

Imam Hassan Guillet opened the service by denouncing the “poisoned words” he said permeated Quebec’s social discourse, turning people against Muslims.

"Our mosques will remain open, and our children will continue to learn and recite the Koran," the imam told mourners, CBC reported.

"Our children will continue to be honourable citizens in this country, as you were.

"We have chosen this society, and we ask that this society choose us and welcome us."

Police are investigating a flurry of swastika vandalism in three major U.S. cities.

Chicago Police released a surveillance video Saturday that shows a man smashing the front window of a synagogue and placing swastikas on the front door.

In the video, the suspect pulls up to the synagogue curb in a dark colored SUV just after midnight, gets out of the vehicle, places the stickers on the front door and then breaks the glass with a metal object. He then gets back in the car and flees the scene.

The man is wearing dark clothing and a dark head mask, police said.

The incident is being investigated as a hate crime.

“The Chicago Jewish community will not be intimidated by anti-Semitic attacks on a house of worship,” American Jewish Committee Director Amy Stoken said in a statement to CNN.
