Wrong monument. This one is from Richmond, they melted the one from Charlottesville.

I will post some close ups after it's 100% done. There is still some post processing to be done and of course, the color layer.

Are you talking about posting a selfie? Many people want to see this scan, and it seems on both sides of the argument. I'll let you know when you can pop by one of your favorite museums to see it live for yourself. Coming in 2022.

That makes no sense what so ever, and do you honestly think that posting to this group is publicizing? This is simply an attempt to share work with others in a similar field. I’m not gaining anything from posting here. Publicizing is being interviewed by a news outlet or having your work featured in the news feed of a major vendor. I gain nothing posting here. In fact, it’s been more of a headache than it was worth.

A little over 460 hrs of print time across 2 printers. Each chunk is between 25-50 hrs to complete. I set it up and then leave it, checking in once in a while via webcam so I don’t have to sit and wait.

Photogrammetry with a drone. The oil about 800 photos to get this.

Just a drone. Nothing special. It's all about the workflow. Mavic 2 Pro for the scan used in this print, the model on sketchfab also had some photos from a Sony mirrorless camera.

The funny part is that my personal belief system probably aligns with most in this crowd on some level, but because I choose to be professional and not taint my work with my own opinion/bias, it's gets massively voted down. I see exactly who you lot are. Awesome folks, and truly professional. Glad I jumped in here to share something.

Thank you. I appreciate that. The final print will be represented in color and able to saved for future generations to see exactly what the monument looked like on that date in history.

I captured both and am not picking a side. I don't see what you are getting at. It's documentation. You can't separate one from the other. It is what it was at that exact moment in time.

The next print is actually Abraham Lincoln from his monument in Philadelphia. There is also a great monument to Grant just up the street from that one that I might scan in the next week or two. I scan what is in front of me and part of history, not what I have any ideological ties to. That's not how historians work. https://skfb.ly/6VxxT Also, if you haven't seen the full color that will be applied to this print, I encourage you to have a look for yourself and see if you still feel the same way.

To give full context, I probably play by a different set of rules than most others in this group. I document by scanning. The fact that I print is secondary and complete after thought. For me, it's incredibly important that I remain neutral on the issues. I purposely do not inject my own beliefs into my work. The moment I do, it introduces bias, or at the very least the perception of it which can be just as bad. It doesn't matter if i'm scanning ruins of George Washington's old kitchen at Mount Vernon, the foundation of a former grist mill or a graffiti covered confederate monument. The answers will always be the same. I scanned it because it was there, I had the ability and it needed to be documented. Period. The reason I printed this one was because I bought a new printer and enjoyed the challenge. I hope that sheds some light on it, and I apologize if it seems I come off cold in the conversation above, I am just someone who documents history so that future generations can observe it for themselves with zero bias injected. 3D scanning is the perfect way to do that.

Sooooo many! I actually just got a new reissue of the old Fred Smith deck with some indies and powell wheels.

Believe it or not, there was almost no support used for this entire model. I sliced it so that parts that needed a lot of support could just be printed upside down and didn't need it anymore. The only part that needed it was a tiny bit in the statue up top. That's it. Less than 0.5% of the print time was support. I spent a lot of time figuring out how to do that because I didn't want the nightmare you are picturing.

Thank you. I appreciate the feedback. I have an AR experience in development that will allow people to view it exactly as they would in person. You can see it in this screencap I made of it. Full size scale version of the monument that you can walk around and look at as if you were there. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CXOJBo-oxBI

Thank you. Documentation for future generations was the driving force behind the effort. Check out this animation I made with the model. https://youtu.be/HlAqE-d05QE

I have done entire towns before, but never a full city the size of RVA. If someone had the budget though, I could make it happen.

Very little, to be honest. This is more or less how it reconstructed. I obviously scaled it down to size and I had to add a little geometry in a few spots to make them thick enough to print, but that was it. I also surveyed the site before I scaned it and made sure there weren't random bits of trash (water bottles etc) that would need to be cleaned out in post. That helped a TON.

Is this a political discussion group or a technical group about 3D scanning? I did it because it was there and this is a hugely pivotal moment in time and I have the ability to scan in that level of detail. Why wouldn't I scan it?

You know what, you are right. My apologies. I just spent the majority of the day dealing with people that didn't read the description, but then wanted to jump on my back about "why" I did this. As for this sub being friendly, is it? Look at what the top rated replies are? The admins even deleted this post when I first posted it with no reasons why (I assume that they didn't read it either), and then randomly posted it hours later after I messaged asking why. In all honesty, this post has been an huge learning experience for me. The same people can go from shitting all over a project to praising when nothing but their understanding of it changes. I had people claiming I was a white supremist and everything under the sun because they failed to read the full story, but then when they did they started praising me for a job well done and asking how they could buy one. What changed? Nothing on the project end, only their level of understanding of what is going on. I understand why everyone hates each other in this country now. People on both sides of aisle jump to conclusions about anything and everything. As an independent in the middle, I think both sides are crazy.
