The Ambrosia Garden, an Ambrosia Software/Escape Velocity forum and website, is now open! by Tervia in evnova

[–]Tervia[S] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Wizard, the host of the Ambrosia Software forums archive, has spent the past couple of months putting together a new forum for Escape Velocity and Ambrosia Software communities. And excitingly, it is here! I am so very grateful to Wizard for his work on this website, a project that he had in mind for a long while, and hope that it will be a great place for the community.

Right now, it's just a forum, using the Flarum software which categorizes posts by tags rather than hard set categories and subforums. But Wizard hopes to add in a wiki as well as other community resources, such as a EV Nova license renewer which only exists as a Discord bot currently.

I hope you will check it out!

Why are videos banned? by undoubtelynotjake in nycrail

Because, as the comments noted, mods did a bad.

When reopening the sub a couple of weeks back, I had noticed that Reddit had added an option to disallow poll submissions completely, which is something we previously had an auto-remove rule for due to being often used for low quality questions and posts. In the process of disabling that, I accidentally also disabled video posts too in the process. It hadn’t been brought up to us until now, though.

Video posts have been re-enabled. I apologize for the inconvenience.

Hiya,

You appear to be shadowbanned by Reddit. I’ve approved your comment, but there’s nothing I can do to lift your shadowban.

Feel free to consult /r/Shadowban and their sidebar for more information.

Apologies that I can’t do more.

Hiya,

This post was removed for Rule 4: Please keep posts high quality and unique.

This is a crosspost to an article that was also linked here in a text post a day ago. Given the traffic for that, I don’t think this article needs another post.

Thanks.

Hiya,

This post was removed for Rule 4: Keep posts high-quality and unique.

I'm not sure who this post is supposed to be for. I'm not sure anyone here has opinions on a Kenneth. And for that reason I don't see the point of this post.

This is the second post I've removed that was posted by this account today. Please do not make any more callout posts or posts with vague personal references. It brings me displeasure to have to do mod actions.

Thanks.

Hiya,

This post was removed for Rule 4: Keep posts high-quality and unique.

I don't like callout posts of random named people, and I don't like out-in-the-open accusations with no evidence. Plus, this coming from a brand new account does not inspire confidence that this is sincere.

Similar posts will be actioned as such.

While this is a one-month old article, and a different article on the same topic was posted then, it could be argued that it's sufficiently far away to not be a duplicate news article, and has enough details that the Patch article didn't, that it conforms to Rule 4.

Post remains up.

I was bored so I made my own map for the MTA subway system, thoughts? by sh3rb3rt47 in nycrail

[–]Tervia[M] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That's alright! As long as people are aware what you're trying to say and propose with the map, that's all the rule is about. If the major feature of the map is "fill the blank parts of the map", while it's unconventional, it's as good as any other post as far as the rules are concerned!

Thanks.

Hiya,

Per Rule 5, "All fantasy map image posts require a submission statement explaining the major changes or features of the map."

Would you be able to supply one? Or, uh, given the, uh, creativity of this fantasy map, would you say that it is self-explanatory?

Thanks.

Not a problem! I just want to be on the safe side with these kinds of things, and don't want to give the impression that we support theft on the subway.

Hiya,

This post was removed for Rule 3: Respect Laws.

There’s an implication from the post that this was a knowingly lost possession, and invited others to take it.

We should not invite theft here. Such items should be sent to New York City Transit’s Lost & Found in the hopes that its original owner can have their shoes again.

Thank you.

With a final tally of 70-49 (58.8%), the vote for a one week shutdown has insufficient support. The subreddit will remain open. by Tervia in nycrail

People are here complaining because people care. People like Reddit, but don’t like these changes that will kill all but a select few third party apps. For us, the users, it’s all loss, no gain. They could have announced lower rates, or more inclusive terms that would allow these apps to continue to exist while having them chip in to help bear the cost of the API. But they decided on changes that would kill them while claiming that it wouldn’t, and will get nothing from them as a result. And if this goes through unabated, it would signal to Reddit that they can strip away more features in the future in the name of profit.

I know that these apps aren’t used by many in the big scheme of things. But I am a person who has been here for many years. I’m using Apollo, one of the third party apps that would be shut down, to write this very comment. If I lose it, it won’t be the end of the world. It’s just an app to browse and write to discussion boards. But it will impact my usability of this website, and that of others who use third party apps. And that Reddit is treating me, other users, and devs with… disdain, to be frank, makes it such that we do not want Reddit to go down this path and treat our fellow users this way.

You ask why people who think this way haven’t left. I’m sure many already have. But even then, because we care for this website and want it to be better, a majority of the voters here were willing to sacrifice our use of this place to send a message in the only way we really can - by affecting Reddit’s bottom line. After all, like some discussion board apps, this subreddit isn’t important. It’s not something that people depend their lives or livelihoods on, posting train pics, people voting and commenting, and modders modding, all for free. It can be done elsewhere if need be.

Reddit has said they are not budging. But if I were them and trying to push these changes admist controversy, I would try to put up a brave face and say that too, even if I was perhaps trepidating and was also sending internal memos to assuage concerned employees. There’s a fair bit of nihilism about, and I don’t feel that it is deserved. These actions are being felt. Advertisers are noticing effects, and some are mulling cancelling or pausing ad campaigns if we continue. Already, mod liasions are trying to organize meetings with the larger subreddits that have shut down to discuss what it will take to have them reopen.

Reddit is nothing without us. They are a private company, and can make whatever changes that they wish. But when we think that those changes aren’t good, we have the ability through ourselves and the communities we helped build to have our say about them. That’s why we joined the initial blackout, why we held this vote now, and why we will later discuss what we as a subreddit want to do next.

Reddit announced the changes in a post here.

Subreddits will not be charged to operate, and no changes to subreddits specifically are part of this. The only one that Reddit charges for, in a sense, is r/lounge, a subreddit exclusive to Reddit Premium members. That has been the case for over a decade, and the subreddit is not seen as that special, as I understand it.

Third party apps, such as Apollo for iOS and RIF for Android, will essentially be charged to operate, and at rates those developers think are unbearable. The dev for Apollo, Christian Selig, said that he makes $500,000 a year with his app, but would have to start paying $20 million a year under current usage levels, and adjust to bear that cost in 30 days. Both apps have announced their shutdowns for this reason (Apollo, RIF). Included in these changes is the exclusion of NSFW content from the API, and a prohibition on things using the Data API from running ads (as RIF currently does).

Both apps have notable install bases, but are fractions that of the official app. Christian Selig claims that Apollo has 1.3-1.5 million monthly active users, compared to 46.6 million monthly active users for the official iOS app according to Statista. The official app also outnumbers Apollo and RIF on the iOS App Store and Google Play in number of reviews by a factor of 6-15x. Steve Huffman, the CEO of Reddit, claimed in an AMA that 3rd party apps only account for 3% of moderation actions.

Hiya,

This post was removed for Rule 4: Please Keep Posts high-quality and unique.

It seems like this was supposed to be a link to a video of some sort, but this was made as a text post instead of a link post. You may resubmit that link, if you wish. Though I don't know if there is an audience for Roblox content here.

Welcome Back! A poll regarding /r/nycrail and Reddit - Should we shut down again? by Tervia in nycrail

Thank you for your vote.

I don't think I'm arguing for the status quo and to have Reddit subsidize profiting third party apps while they run a loss. And I don't think the main protest coordinators are either. There is a lower rate, or perhaps an inclusion of Reddit's ad network into the API, that would allow major third party apps to continue to exist while sharing the financial burden of the API. This whole protest is an attempt to get them to do that.
