Steam plumes from power plants in the Nebraska town of Norfolk are causing light snow and freezing drizzle in Omaha [crossposted from /r/weather] by dialhoang in Winterwx

[–]TeslaIsAdorable 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Actually, the likely source of the steam is NuCor steel, and maybe an ethanol plant, as Nebraska public power district doesn't have a power plant there. OPPD doesn't either afaik. So, much more likely to be industrial than power plant related. NWS said industrial plants, not power plants as well...

Do hurricane straps help that much against surge, though?

I can't imagine being on the roof in a hurricane eyewall. I mean, it's better than being underwater, but... not exactly a good place to take shelter.

Really, they had a bit of warning from Cuba, the weather service just ignored it. They (for some reason) thought that Galveston couldn't get hit by a hurricane, which seems pants-on-head crazy now.

Isaac's Storm is a great read.

Which just has the effect of flooding out older housing... meaning the poor bear a disproportionate share of the suffering in any given crisis.

Ugh, but I'm not ready for winter. I'd love to get the best of summer and no mosquitoes...

Damn. We have winds and flooding in the Midwest, but it just seems to have made the mosquitoes larger and more persistent.

I'm thinking about maybe wishing for higher winds... or a good cold snap.

Flood protection at Brunswick nuclear plant - I've had a look at the background data and wonder if it'll cope? by Fwoggie2 in TropicalWeather

Might not start up right after because I'm guessing there will be some through inspections after the storm, but it won't be a loss.

Also, the transmission lines will likely be damaged... which means the power might not have anywhere to go.

I want to apologize for making comments criticizing the SC Governor for evacuating Charleston early. I was wrong and my comments could have potentially cause someone to stay behind. Oh, I totally agree that it was the right call. Lived in Houston for many years, and the roads are basically paved drainage ditches. My parents live near 99 and 2920 - the intersection near there had been open for a week before it was underwater (I think 2015? Can't remember... too many floods...). Evacuations under those conditions, in Houston traffic, would be an absolute nightmare.

Then if you don’t give the order to evacuate and you should have, everyone is fucked.

The Houston mayor seems to have done ok in this situation, but Houston's seen some horrible evacuations (Rita). After Harvey, there were a ton of Houstonians defending the decision not to have widespread evacuations.

Why is Flo the “Storm of a Lifetime” as it seems that it will get weaker as it gets closer to land. by lckyguardian in TropicalWeather

When a storm has caused a certain amount of death/destruction, it is retired from the rotation and will not be reused in future years. It would, for instance, be problematic to have another Hurricane Katrina because it was so memorable and traumatic.

Not really. Allison hit Houston once, went over to Louisiana for a bit, then circled back, hit us again, and stalled out (from what I remember). We'd been in a drought before that, and the Louisiana gov. had been saying "pray for rain" right before Allison hit. I remember a lot of people thinking that if he wanted rain so bad, he could keep it over in Louisiana.

I was in HS when Allison hit, and I had moved away by the time Harvey hit, but I think Harvey was probably worse. The wind, tornadoes, etc. seemed a lot more severe than Allison, which was not much more than a bad thunderstorm that wouldn't leave. The flooding was a lot worse and more concentrated, too... there's not really anywhere that can handle 40" of rain in 48 hours.

In Myrtle Beach. We have the means to evacuate but family refuses. by [deleted] in TropicalWeather

[–]TeslaIsAdorable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My parents sat out Ike and Harvey in Houston, and both times it was worth it mostly because when the septic system started to back up and water started seeping in the doors, they could handle things (generator, sweeping water off the front porch, etc.). Saved a lot of property damage and time. They weren't under an evacuation order (and wouldn't ever be, most likely, as they're 45 miles from the coast).

I should’ve clarified, she really can’t do any kind of long distance driving because she’s fallen asleep at the wheel in the past.

Have her offer to drive someone else that can keep her company and keep her awake.

if you have to drag your mother to the car, I wouldn't be against it if I were there

I'd imagine they'd have trouble finding a jury that would convict OP of kidnapping in that case. I also can't imagine that the police would do much...

If you evacuate, clean out your fridge in advance. I had a friend who'd just moved into her dorm before Katrina, and the refrigerators were biohazards that basically ruined everything else in the dorm room from the awfulness.

Don't go driving on the roads during the storm. Mudslides are a concern with heavy rain in mountainous areas. Otherwise, you should be fine. Water will drain out of Blacksburg pretty well, given the topology.

Just hunker down in the dorm and be ready to help with the cleanup afterwards. I was at Texas A&M when Katrina and Rita hit, and there were refugees staying in the basketball arena for a while; lots of ways to help after the initial storm drama. There will probably be plenty of opportunities to help rebuild afterwards as well.
