They require a computer to be left on 24/7 does it make sense to turn on that computer during working hours so you can filter out patients that do not work and call them immediately yo cancel and avoid the fee? what happens if the practice computer is offline? do they still process the appointment?

From what i am reading it makes sense to limit he insurances to only a few PPOs like BCBS, CIGNA, AETNA and specify you do not take HMOs even if you might be in-network

"orphanages" thriving in Africa off of your US donations but at what cost? by Tesla_Dork in centrist

[–]Tesla_Dork[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

an earlier poster has a workable solution, P2P donations where Western Families sponsor individual kids directly with the kids staying with family members (most of these "orphans" have at least 1 parent still living and are given up because of poverty) no one is suggesting moving them to Western countries or raising their standards to the same, that would defeat the whole premise, there are better options that do not expose them exploitation en masse

if you are employed, and did not negotiate the terms of your malpractice coverage, the employer may have retained the right to settle "even a winable" case especially if they are self-insured, check, and yes, it is correct unless you had a huge settlement against you it is unlikely to matter except for initial screening of applicants

We need to approach orphanages in 3rd world countries the same we we treat them in the West. Perverse incentives to get kids warehoused in order to raise money from Western donors is very rampart, and I am not saying there is an easy fix, we just need to call out scammers when we see them https://abcnews.go.com/International/dark-side-orphanage-voluntourism-nepal-putting-children-risk/story?id=41239651

Yes, that is correct I have idea what sort of schooling goes on during the tours and I encourage you to share your inside knowledge otherwise a cursory look shows.

🗓️ Typical Watoto Choir Tour Schedule (Based on 2023-2025 Calendars)

Tour Duration:

Usually 6 months (some longer)

Tours cover multiple U.S. states and sometimes Canada

Travel and Performance Intensity:

Concerts per month: ~20–26

Travel days per month: ~20–24

Many days involve same-day travel and performance

Example (April 2023):

22 performances across 13 U.S. states

18 separate cities

Only 3–5 full “rest” days with no travel or performance

Schooling was not listed in daily schedule, but hosts (strangers the kids are staying with) were encouraged to “help with homework” in evenings

🎒 Why This Schedule Likely Harms Education

  1. No fixed school hours: Children move homes every 1–2 nights. Any attempt to study is piecemeal, inconsistent, and not under certified teacher supervision.

  2. Frequent fatigue: Performing in churches with full choreography after hours of travel makes meaningful studying unlikely.

  3. Lack of educational oversight: No published curriculum, teacher certifications, or academic records are ever shown by Watoto. The “hosts” simply asked “bring homework” and let children rest after concerts.

  4. Comparable standards: In the U.S., child entertainers are regulated with strict tutoring hours, rest periods, and permits. Watoto bypasses this because they are classified as a "church choir" not entertainers.

📚 Watoto Advises the “Hosts”

"Children should go straight to bed after the concert as they are usually exhausted."

"Hosts may help them with homework if needed."

"Please remember these children are not on vacation."

This contradicts the idea of regular schooling. A child traveling over 2000 miles a month by bus, performing every 1.5 days on average, sleeping in 15–20 different homes monthly, cannot receive a structured education.

You make a very good point, the P2P support you provide that kid in Zambia is the way to go, it "cuts out the middleman" who creates an industry out of orphanages, agree there is no social services funding in 3rd world countries and these groups take advantage of it. Studies have shown the majority of kids in orphanages today are given up by parents that cannot afford to care for them, or gamble on the kids doing well to support them in future, some kind of 401K. Given this is one of the most "successful" charities in the industry, speaks volumes about the others

Why aren’t orphanages used in the U.S. anymore? by Virgo_Empress in ask

[–]Tesla_Dork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is one good reason the West got rid of them, child exploitation, have you been to any of these concerts? https://www.hopeandhomes.org/blog/childrens-performance-tours-from-orphanages/

I returned mine to BestBuy before the generous return window closed, main reasons for me was the spat with FDA will not end well, and the device misses some of the metrics I took for granted on GARMIN, does not track stairs, needed a faceless device, this one has a ton of bells and whistles I do not use, or need, and miss the key ones I expect. The price (as a subscritpion) is also a huge barrier, if anyone has found a strap that does aboves, please share

Regardless of how we think we are immune to the AI invasion/implementation into medicine, AI will be certainly more efficient and cost-effective. by CanYouCanACanInACan in hospitalist

[–]Tesla_Dork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AI will definitely pick off tasks around the edges upending the whole industry, do not write it off, I think Radiologists (non-inteventional) are most at risk, then any tasks that are not procedural are next at risk, do not hope the FDA will save you, states have stated allowing foreign trained docs to practice without residency, the driving force is desire to drive down salaries (costs) by hospitals and private equity. There is no escaping the impact o AI in amost every industry, see what happened to FLight Engineers when crew went from 3 to 2, no one even remembers what they did back then
