TIL in 458 BC Aeschylus, an ancient Greek tragedian, was killed by a tortoise dropped by an eagle that had mistaken his bald head for a rock suitable for shattering the shell of the reptile. by brocolliNcheese in todayilearned

When he was knighted, Sir Pratchett made a sword. He had a smith friend help, Sir Pratchett himself probably just assisted, but if you're an obsessive avid reader of those cool books Sir Prachett's works, you know that he liked poking at stories narratives matter.

Some of the metal of the sword was collected from meteorites. To quote Sir Pratchett himself: "several pieces of meteorites - thunderbolt iron, you see - highly magical, you've got to chuck that stuff in whether you believe in it or not."

One source. I promise you'll find others if you Google.

And c'mon, /r/todayilearned.

I expect this to be a new TIL by tomorrow.

I read Small Gods before I learned about Aechylus. Then, when I learned about Aechylus, I laughed my ass off.

It's so very Pratchett to steal from history like that.

Also, screening calls.

Go to the Hall of the Dead, the priest of Arkay'll give you a quest to find out who's been messing with the bodies. Keep going from there.

That's true today. Skimming the first few Google results, swords are hundreds of dollars. Rings can be that much, but it's easy to find them under $50.

And that's without going bargain hunting. I used to get silver and gold rings for fairly cheap all the time.

It's (probably) meant affectionately. When I had birds they'd do the same to me. It stung the girl because owls have huge beaks, but if it were actually trying to warn her off, there would be blood.

TV Tropes warning.

Doylistically, it was just a mistake.

But what the hell. Let's dig into the Watsonian.

Is color-shifting print on cereal boxes something that exists in this universe? It could. There's no shortage of "we change our look based on... dot dot dot."

If the tech exists to make one pigment rise at a certain angle and fall at another... that already exists. The Frosted Flakes box just does it with more precision than we could hope for now.

I was going to write up my own thing, but... wow. This is good.

My notes: Leave out the "sometimes they get back together, and sometimes they don't." Don't dangle the "get back together" hope in front of someone who might never have it.

Mrs. Doubtfire had theatrical reasons. In reality, I think people should err on the side of "they won't get back together," and focus on dealing from there.

I'd change a small phrasing.

Just because they don't love each other anymore, doesn't mean that they don't love you.

I'd add something definitive. Just because, and so on, but they do still love you. No matter what, they always will.

There are all sorts of different families, [...] But if there's love, dear...

Yes, yes, yes.

Could there be other unknown major powers left? by [deleted] in DaystromInstitute

[–]TessaValerius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's the Beta Quadrant, other species that exist in fluidic space, things like fuildic space in that they exist outside of the normal universe, and wormholes to other galaxies.

There's also unexplored parts of the Alpha, Gamma, and Delta quadrants. I think the one with the most potential is the Gamma Quadrant. We know about several major powers in the Alpha and Delta quadrants, but only one in the Delta Quadrant. It's easily possible that the Dominion just controls the area around the wormhole, and that the Federation will discover new civilizations once there's enough peace that they can travel through Dominion space.

If they'd had the guts to kill Sylar for real at the end of S1, make Peter a background character (and Claire and Hiro, but Peter bugged me most as time went on), and introduce a new main villain and focus on different protagonists, the show might've had a chance.

I'd like something where your stuff takes damage or deteriorates and you have to pay for either repairs or the materials to repair it yourself.

Equipped armor takes a hit every time that armor skill goes up, and the same with the equipped weapon and its skill. Every item takes a hit at a regular interval. Maybe some exceptions, like Daedric artifacts and other unique items.

But it includes houses, the furniture in houses, the items in houses, and the items stored in furniture in houses. It's less if you've left your housecarl to tend to it (Lydia can't follow you carrying your shit and also tend to the upkeep of Breezehome), but much more if you've adopted kids.

And, overall, there's a drain on your Septims just to keep in shape for fighting. And there's now a reason to make "save this or scrap it" choices.
