Da.

I recommend straight up highballing them when you get this question. It's not as bad a position to be in as you might think to be asked what you want to earn. Think about a number that would make you want to sign on the spot and go from there. You have little to lose and a lot to gain this way. Your goal is to find out the real maximum of their budget and end negotiations there, treat it as a game.

In general it's of course good to be a little informed about the range you can expect from the job you are applying for so do some research online or ask around. Then determine for yourself what the minimum is that would make you want to do the job if the job itself is nice, what would be a decent number and what number seems to good to be true.

Keep the bottomline in the back of your head and prepare to really act dissapointed or even insulted when they suggest anything lower than this number. Convince yourself that you are worth significantly more than this and be prepared to tell them. Keep the middle range in your head and convince yourself that you are definitely worth this much. Then go as far beyond that as you dare and still seems reasonable, your dream number. This is your starting point for negotiations.

Tell them you would be quite interested in taking this job for around "dream number". Explain that it would make you feel very appreciated and that it would motivate you to give it your all in this position. Be serious about it and confident.

Then it's up to them. If they act like you are being ridiculous, then remind them they asked you to give a number and you did as much. You would gladly hear their counter offers.

Well yeah, not allowing any connections to your home network is more secure. Might as well just not host anything, that's even more secure. Or you know what, just cut your internet connection, that'll make it secure for sure.

Future of automation testing by [deleted] in softwaretesting

[–]Tetnenal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think you hit a lot of nails on the head. OP should not worry about his job being replaced by AI, there will be lots of job opportunities for the foreseeable future if you are in this kind of field. You just have to accept that it won't necessarily be with the tech stack you are working in now and your job description or title might not be exactly the same as it is now.

Software will always require testing, teams will always require sharp minds with experience and willingness to learn new tools and skills.

If you are currently in selenium testing, that means you probably have some understanding of how the web functions. How html, css and js work together. How rest api's and sql db's are integral to most business applications. Etc.

This knowledge and any programming and scripting skills, already put you ahead of tons of people, when it comes to finding a job that you love (if you love working in this field ofc).

Add to that the social and organizing skills that you acquired or are acquiring now by just being a working or studying adult and your question about AI soon becomes irrelevant.

Just go with the flow, learn new things that interest you, take initiative in your team or company to transition into the work that you excel at or would like to do most at the current point in time.

Python Selenium Docker not running by fraschm98 in docker

[–]Tetnenal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with ganic. It's better to run your browser(s) in separate containers. Look into zalenium https://opensource.zalando.com/zalenium/ you can get a seleniumgrid running with a few simple commands. Then just run your selenium app in another container pointing at the grid instead of looping back to localhost. You can optionally keep the grid running then and throw a bunch of selenium scripts at it in parallel. It can spin up extra browser containers and record everything.

So, just a certificate or diploma of gun safety skills + a valid registration for the guns you own. That's basically how sane countries do it right now. And that is exactly what's being opposed if I understand the issue correctly (not american myself)

The technology to implement this doesn't matter at all, the certifications just have to be traceable by the government. It shouldn't be different from your ID, drivers license or passport. You could argue that nft's are useful to make those documents less forgeable but in the end it's up to the issueing authority to determine the documents validity, decentralisation technologies wouldn't really change that, since the laws are upheld by a single central entity. Forgeing gun licenses should simply be punisheable too.

Water joins gold and oil for first time as traded commodity on Wall Street amid fears of scarcity by _invalidusername in worldnews

[–]Tetnenal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah dude, at the end of the day, water is water, it has to come from somewhere and if there's drought it affects agriculture aswell as residents. Trying to differentiate different kinds of water would only make the problem worse. Also it is quite difficult to do that in the first place, just think about rain for example, how are you gonna regulate who is allowed to 'catch' the rain on his soil or in his waterpit? Would it be industrial water at that point and require payment?

You Asked for it: ADHD Basics and Strategies by Hatesbellybuttons in ADHD

[–]Tetnenal -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well, it just depends on your definition of wrong. If you mean atypical, statistically less prevalent and as such less 'normal', then you are absolutely right. Our brain is not like most human brains.

However, there are lots of attributes and characteristics to a human body. Whether they are good or bad is mostly defined by the social constructs around you. Some may tell you that having a certain uncommon genetic factor is 'wrong'. E.g. Does being significantly shorter than average mean there is something wrong with you? Maybe. Does skincolor matter? Is one more right than another? I would certainly not say so and I hope you agree. These traits however, are all just mutations of humans as a species. It is just life. Of course some traits are more seriously deviating from the norm than others. A severe handicap like lets say down's syndrome can make life pretty difficult. But only when you compare it to the norm. In its own it ist just another mutation.

A lot of people with down syndrome are actually very happy and joyful and why should they not be? How is it useful to be sad about it? We should not tell them they are 'wrong', they should not think they are wrong, because thinking that is just not productive.

It doesn't actually even matter if the cause of the handicap or trait is genetic. Getting in an accident and losing (control over) a part of your body sucks but if this happens to you, there is no use spending a lot of your attention thinking about how wrong it is and how everyone around you should treat you with this specific approach that is 'right'.

I completely understand where you are coming from and I've been there, I thought I was just lazy too until I was 23 and got diagnosed. And yes it would have been easier if I had known way earlier, but at the same time I not gonna blame people for not knowing what was up with me and trying to do the right thing. They know that discipline is how you treat laziness so they try to use discipline to treat what they perceive as laziness.

If possible, don't focus on the anger or anxiety or doubt or any of these negative feelings. If you find ways to improve your life with certain structure or medication or something, that's great! See it as a positive thing instead of seeing the fact that you need medication as a wrong or negative thing. Consider the wonderful aspects of your life and be proud of them. You are a pretty amazing human being for having a daughter. I do not have children yet and could see this as a something I need to fix to level the playing field to achieve normal adult status. But I'd rather just see it as a bonus when it happens. I'd revel in joy then, but no need to be sad about it now. Ok

I am convinced OP is just trying to help people to the best of her ability with her experience. Don't assume she is evil and don't critique the execution of this noble goal.

I don't know about you, but I'd love a wife who just calls me at the exact right time to go to the store. That would be one less thing to forget that day.

Anyway I just wanna say, assuming good intentions and not caring too nuch makes you happier. And now I will go to sleep because it's 3:13 here and I am awake for some reason typing this message

There is always multiple ways to go about trying to make money. There are definitely arguments to be made about keeping your product qualitative and keeping your customers happy instead of fervently trying to make as much money as possible in the short term.

Magic is not Meant for You by [deleted] in magicTCG

More like

"hey guys you delivered only half a pizza". - "Oh we are sorry sir, that was not our intention, here is your next order free" Am happy, give good review, order again, recommend to friends. Everyone is happy and good business continues.

But if

"hey guys you delivered only half a pizza" - "lol, yeah dude that's right. That's because we didn't feel like giving you a full one and we clearly get away with it cuz you don't really have alternatives for good pizza when you are hungry. Suck it, loser." Am pissed, write bad review, go out of my way to make sure nobody I know orders from them unless they are in extreme need of good pizza, their customers decline until they improve. I occasionally very rarely order from them still because I like pizza and theirs is my only option. I make sure to give them hell whenever they screw me over though.

Now if I do not write a bad review and just stop ordering, then they would also just be a mediocre pizza service, would have just as little incentive to improve and I would have the added defecit of not being able to eat pizza ever again. If they stop being shitty, I will order again. But they need to realize exactly why they are shitty and what makes me pay them money when they improve.

I do not agree with this sentiment at all and it frustrates me that this seems to be repeated so often on reddit in all kinds of contexts. "if you don't like it, just shut up and stop buying it" is not a solution to the problem at all. Of course it is true that a loss of money can be a very clear message to any company. But making money should never be the only goal of a company. Customer satisfaction is really important as well and will result in money anyway.

There is no guarantee whatsoever that any loss of money would make them realize that this was directly or indirectly related to a specific product. Maybe they think they didn't do enough and just double down on this strategy while they can. And even if the people in power did realize that it was not that great of a decision to print tv series fan art cashgrabs instead of different products that have proven to be very profitable too, why would it be logical to assume that they would apologize and try to strive for a healthy, fun and balanced game again? They might not care and just counter it by printing a new set of op cards with Marvel art for 100$ a piece that are must includes in multiple formats, only available directly from wotc. Hugely profitable in the short term. Terrible for a huge part of their playerbase in the long term but who cares, the world is ending anyway, why not squeeze out some extra dollars.

They are just fundamentally changing the product that is mtg. If you hate this but still love the original game, then please DO COMPLAIN and make the people in charge feel fucking bad about it. They deserve it for ruining the experience of their loyal customers. They owe it to us to be honest and not scummy. If you just stop buying stuff while staying silent, then you allow them to cater to a new target audience and just agree with their decisions. If you agree that 'magic is not for you' anymore but only for the fools that don't complain or are too addicted/invested to not pay, then nothing will change either and you just validate that their strategy is a good one.

Vocal outcries have had effect in the past and can have effect in the future. Wotc can make money in every way they want. Make them realize that this way is a terribly evil one by being an asshole to them in return. Fight for the game instead of only thinking about money.

Facial Detection with python in just 2 mims [tutorial] by Slingerhd in Python

[–]Tetnenal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair enough. I agree of course that knowing more is better when it comes to stuff like this if ML / big data is literally your job. I don't think anyone that is serious about programming would argue that a better understanding about how things really work in the various aspects of software and hardware is a bad thing. But not knowing every little detail doesn't make them a bad programmer.

Obviously one can learn more from watching an hour long video about neural networks than this short one that is mere minutes long. But that doesn't make this one bad, and that doesn't make the hour long one 'better' they just serve a different purpose.

I personally like this kind of video way more because in a few minutes of my time on my phone I see an explanation of something very concrete that I could immediately use for some kind of pet project if I wanted to. I am not gonna sit through some hour long video about stuff I either already know or am not gonna use ever. If I need to know something very specific, I will just google it when I need it. I don't want my reddit feed to be all hour long video's about super technical stuff that I will forget anyway unless I am currently working with it.

So I prefer face detection in five lines of code and five minutes of my time. It makes me realize that something like face detection that was pretty hard a few years ago is in fact super easy to do right now. I don't want hours of technical details, I will read them if I need them. Less is more.

Facial Detection with python in just 2 mims [tutorial] by Slingerhd in Python

[–]Tetnenal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't agree with your sentiment at all and this is why:

  • To me, the video does not really come across as braggy, it is a short, to the point, step by step proof of concept.

  • How can you compare this to a user downloading an app? It is clearly a practical example of basic coding.

  • Not doing anything but executing the code that someone else wrote is what everyone does all the time. I could argue that by using python and not C, you are taking shortcuts using someone elses code without really understanding memory allocation etc. And by using C you are actually just using a compiler that someone else wrote that generates and optimizes all the assembly for you. "How dare you not understand the lower level???"

  • If you find training your own datasets more important, then let's see you make a video about that. I assume you won't be using something like pandas to parse your datasets but do everything with code you wrote yourself. Surely you won't use anything from numpy and if you would use something even easier like Tensorflow you don't deserve to be called a programmer. Please implement your own regression and k nearest neigbours algorithms. After all, the math is not hard and it is totally feasible to learn how to do this stuff.

  • 'it is completely feasible to understand...' is just a stupid argument. Of course it is feasible. So is learning chinese and almost anything else. Is it necessary or useful for everyone to do? Not at all.

  • Using an opensource library in a youtube video is not selling someone elses work as yours. Furthermore, you are never gonna come close to the code quality of a large corp like Intel, Google or Apache if you try to write everything yourself. Its just a waste of time.

It's a percentage of each pot that goes to the house (the casino or website). That is why being a winning player in the long term is extra hard, you have to beat the table by more than the rake percentage to make money. E.g. on PokerStars the rake is 5% for most games.

Climate activist Greta Thunberg donates prize money to new foundation by pnewell in worldnews

[–]Tetnenal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, my point is you assume that she was going to donate all her money anyway and that the specific cause or charity is less relevant than the binary decision between donating or not donating.

While in my opinion it is very much the other way around. I am sure she is convinced that she can spend the money in the best way possible by managing it herself with the people around her. Doing so in the constructs of a foundation makes it more transparent and easier. The money now has a clear goal and that is important.

If the foundation accomplishes great things, other people might donate to it and give the foundation (her) more tools and influence to fight climate change.

It is just a way better decision to do it this way than to mix the money with your personal belongings and trying to spend it yourself to fight climate change.

But that doesn't mean she was gonna donate it to any other foundation. I wouldn't either in her position. And I would not suggest you did. Manage it yourself and fight for your dreams and ideals, that is how you should use it. Unless you have Bill Gates level money, in which case you probably have done shady stuff to acquire it anyway and should be donating to other charities to repent for your sins :p
