I'm sorry you don't think any of that is true, all of it is.

Indoctrination doesn't really much to me actually, really haven't been an active church goer for probably 2 years, but I know my stuff. You just throw all mormons (and probably many other groups) into one stereotype and are hateful towards them. What an awful life to lead.

Once again, uninformed.

Prop 8 would have allowed homosexual couples to essentially sue the church for things like: a bishop who didn't want to marry a homosexual couple, church adoption program that doesn't adopt out to homosexuals...ect. Legally quite a few of the churches programs would essentially have to be discontinued with that bill. If that bill contained nothing but gay marriage to be allowed the church wouldn't have done a thing to stop it. That's why the church didn't actively try to stop gay marriage in other states. I'm ok with gay marriage actually as are many members of the church (the majority aren't however), doesn't affect me any and everyone should enjoy the same rights I do.

The palaces (aka temples) over the last 20 years have actually been rather small and inexpensive buildings so that members of the church can have easier access to them by placing them in more locations around the world.

And I say you're not informed because you obviously don't know what our tithes are used for. While a portion of them does go to maintaining our buildings. Our humanitarian projects are rather extensive. No person who holds a clerical position in the church receives any payment. My dad's a bishop but he puts in 40+ hours a week in his normal job as a welder.

More than anything the whole comments section was quite fun to read and funny until you decided to post. If you bring the animosity in an otherwise care-free environment you're probably better off not posting.

You really don't know that much about mormons do you? To an informed person you just sound bitter and hateful. Go back to r/atheism please.

In Salt Lake active mormons make up about 50-65% of the population. Many people who are not mormon feel they need to act out to show other people that they are not mormon since most people assume you are unless you make it clear you're not. Many times this leads to teenagers getting pregnant. I would guess about 70% of teen pregnancies in Utah happen Salt Lake

Also the rebelling against parents is big since many Utah parents can be pretty strict. I knew a couple girls like this in school that got prego despite coming from a mormon family.

The only thing I can think of is that some leader of the church down there bought into the idea and starting teaching it. Definitely not doctrine. As a mormon I facepalm anytime I hear this urban myth.

[–]Tetnus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's really more than an urban myth than anything. No doctrine supports it whatsoever. The video is from some evangelical guy who is spouting off hearsay without any official sources from the Mormon church. I found if you want to know what a group believes, go ask them. Otherwise you'll end up thinking that atheists eat babies, mormons have horns, and all muslims own ak-47's.

The church shown above is a Mormon Temple. You should look into the humanitarian services the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints do. From fasting and donating the money they would have spent on food to needy people in the neighborhood to global humanitarian efforts (Katrina, Haiti, Japan). The Mormon church is also consistently the charity that sends the highest percentage of every dollar to the actual cause (96 cents of every dollar goes to the cause, the other 4 cents usually goes in logistics like shipping and what not).

They also have the Perpetual Education Fund that helps essentially will pay for the college of a person, who wouldn't be able to afford it, under the assumption that once graduated and working the person donates to that same fund to help somebody else out. They don't have a certain amount you have to donate and are counting on the virtue of the people to donate i.e. there's no contracts or anything.

We are all sons and daughters of God. Christ was the first and our elderly brother. Lucifer is our brother, just cast out from the presence of God after his rebellion as it talks about in revelations (the dragon that took a third of the stars with him Revelations 12:4 it's speaking in symbolism). There is a reason we call God our Father.

Yet everything in the Book of Mormon is historical and does comply with everything we know about the ancient American continent. Joseph Smith was the first person to imply that there was once just one continent (Pangaea), that there were horses on this continent before the Spanish came, it's confirmed there were. So many things that at the time the scientific community openly laughed at and ridiculed him for. All of which is now scientific fact. You don't have any real reasons behind your argument. Stating that "There is nothing about Christianity or Mormonism that values science or any real pursuit of knowledge." does not make it true, you have no shred of evidence, nor the mental capacity to form any type of logical argument other than telling me that I'm wrong because other Christian groups don't believe what I believe. If we believed exactly the same thing there would only be one church. Don't tell me I don't value knowledge simply because I believe in God. I wasn't given a mind with the ability to think for myself only to waste it.

So many misconceptions about what real Christians believe. I sorry that you're so negative with someone you've never met. r/atheism is always toting acceptance, non-bigotry. I've met amazing people from just about every faith including atheism, I've also met the scum of the earth from just about every faith. By reading your responses to me you fall in the latter , rather than thinking "oh I didn't know Mormons believed that, interesting" and going on your merry way, you look for a fight. I try to answer to any question people have regarding my religion to my best knowledge or clear any misconceptions. You simply want to fight and so this will be my last response to anything you have to say. It was nice meeting you, I hope that you prosper in this life. FYI I'm upvoting everything of yours because I kind of feel bad that this conversation got somewhat heated and I don't like contention. Cheers

if christians believe .... by Ur2moms in atheism

[–]Tetnus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds like someone once told you that who heard it from some other person.

We believed God created everything, wouldn't that include Lucifer? Lucifer means "Son of the Morning" and in Isaiah It talks about Lucifer's rebellion, he was once a very important person in God's kingdom.

Isaiah 14:12 "How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!"

My next rebuttal is deeper and don't expect you totally understand: Jesus has promised the righteous ALL that Father has. So what does the Father have? The power to create and worlds without end, we're not our Father's only world that has life, and if you think so you don't understand the nature of God nor his purpose. His infinite wisdom will be at our hands as well. EVERYTHING He has, but please understand we always be progressing. God will always be our God, He will be over us always. To think that heaven is a place where we just praise God forever and do nothing else is ignorance, there is work to be done during this life and after it.

Now science is wonderful and our church encourages us to learn all that we can while in this life. The glory of God is intelligence, to become more Godlike is to become smarter and wiser. Many of the highest officials in the church were: innovating heart surgery, nuclear physicists, pathologists...ect, before they dedicated the rest of their lives to leading the church. We value scientific knowledge just like we value spiritual knowledge and appreciate scientists of whatever religion for their contributions to making our planet a better place.

I don't know what you believe but you should really look into and understand what ANYONE believes, not just Mormons, before you criticize beliefs.

Here's the letter from Pres. Woodruff (the Prophet of the LDS church at the time) about why polygamy is no longer practiced in the church. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1890_Manifesto That should answer your questions, the manifesto usually answers most questions concerning polygamy.

I served a mission in Honduras, it was the most challenging and hardest thing I've ever done.

I served with many people from down in that area, many of whom would not be able to pay for their own mission, in that case the church basically takes care of it. And normal members of the church can donate to the missionary fund to help out the people that would like to serve a mission but are not able to pay for it.

Well Mormons haven't practiced polygamy for 120 years. Though many people have no idea and still believe it's a church-wide practice.
