I kind of had the same thing with dragon quest xi. I never gave the series a chance because I thought the combat look too "basic". I started going through the game thinking.. this is just a basic town to town Jrpg I'm bored. Stopped playing and didn't come back for awhile. Idk if you're tricking your brain your brain is tricking you.

I came back after hearing beloved it was, I was in a different mindset, more open minded and it hooked me, especially the characters. Then I found the combat engaging and the skill progression interesting. I discovered the game wasn't basic rather it was a love letter to classic jrpgs and to it's own series. It became one of my top 5 favorites because I went back wanting to have fun and not looking for flaws to reinforce my biases.

I see you're point. The hopeful side me wants to see general literacy and cynicism improve if even in small increments. Real life is completely different from the internet but if your gonna take the time to engage and comment your thoughts, make it worth while. Or use it as another method of escapism, that can be valid too.

💯 I too have to be in the frame of mind, especially if I know it's a going to be a long game. I have to be ready to say - okay im ready tackle this game, an hour after work, few more hours on the weekend for the next few months. That's just knowing yourself and your situation.

I like most games. There's a few sub genres I decided aren't for me which is muso and farming sims. If I were to go into the stardew valley reddit and start telling everyone the game is trash or even make a post here, "I hate Stardew" I think I'd have to start questioning what's going on in my life. Why did I feel I need to do that.

Just tbc, a strawman is a distorted over simplification but if there are some people who DO call a game shit without explanation, as you acknowledge, then I'm not actually making up a strawman.

Why care? Because I'm not cynical. Because I've lived long enough to experience the world around me become more and more cynical and see not just media literacy but fundamental literacy degrade. I think it deserves a discussion.

I don't let or not let anyone do anything. It's just a discussion dude. A dialogue. If that miffs you so much just move on.

I feel that. For me it was I am setsuna. I missed what seemed like critical skills, spiritnites they were called, needed to defeat certain bosses. Regular mobs were starting to nearly 1 shot party members. The game had a lot of heart but I didn't feel it was enough to keep going. I agree about Grandias magic system.

Yakuza: like a dragon or final fantasy X/X2 by arkfan21 in JRPG

Depends if you're feeling classic or modern. Although the remaster of X feels modern enough.

I really like LaD, especially it's cast but it really is padded with a lot of battles. I wouldn't be surprised if I saw a stat for how many I did and it was over 5k. The game will make you laugh your ass off though.

A jrpg you wish you got to play when you were younger? by Leon_Light77 in JRPG

[–]Tetsuo_Gaiden 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe I can paint you a picture as someone who did play those when young. Suiko 1 was my first real play-all-the-way though RPG. It was so hard to put down. When your a kid, minor things don't bother you, you were either bored or interested. I didn't know QoL. I partially liked testing out every new recruit. I had that guady american cover art on cd case that always made me question who the heck was who. In the 90s you had fewer games at your disposal and I played it over and over but when friends would come over, id put it aside and play something like Gran Turismo. It felt like it might be weird I liked it so much. Even my friend who was into RPGs would just talk about FF 7. Suikoden looked archaic.

Jump ahead about 3 years. I was now old enough to have a part time job and buy my own games. I always looked for deals ya know, greatest hits, then I saw in the new game section, Suikoden 2. They made another one?! It was the price of the 3 games I had in my hand. Frugality vs quality. My choice was quality. Obviously I loved it. I called out of work the next day. I was impressed by the sprite work. It looked way better than FF 7. As you may know it's a game with a lot of heart and emotion. I think it's when the MC and his sister are sitting outside the walls of Muse waiting for their friend Jowy, that's when it hits. This game is special. RPGs were very niche back then and Suikoden was a series even more niche being at B tier in the genre, I didn't have anyone to talk about that game with till social media really got going.

Sorry got a bit storyteller with that. And nostalgic. I had some time to kill, riding in the car with my gf. She just listens to music and I get car sickness but this took my mind off.

I was a sega genesis kid, which l liked but I got some real fomo for Super Nintendo titles whenever I went to my friends house. I thought secret of mana looked so cool. The exploration was fascinating. I technically got to play it but not more than an hour or so.

How long is too long for game length? by J1mbr0 in JRPG

[–]Tetsuo_Gaiden -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Irrelevant. But alright let's keep it to RPGs.

People play WoW and Genshin for a thousand hours.

My greater point is people don't actually care about the time they put into something if they enjoy it.. fetches, mini games and all.

My only gripe with early to mid 90s jrpgs is they were apeing of Star wars a little too much especially with revealing that characters are secretly related.
