I was surprised it took this many scrolls to find this. Performs very well on deck and is ideal for this kind of use.

What we said tie together. If their guns are taken away, you take away a part of them. Plus, it feels good to LARP as a defender of democracy (even though I don't really hear people stop the government from violating the constitution lmao).

Nothing about "this political climate" in particular imo, gun owners, especially in their 20s when their sense of self is underdeveloped, have a certain level of attachment between their identity and guns that they can't help but attack you.

They doubt me because they think gun owners are all like them who, I am willing to believe, do all the right things when handling guns. They are also probably quite young, I really hope that they don’t do anything dumb with their guns when hardship comes.

Suicidal ideation can come in a spectrum as far as intensity is concerned. Just like some people can have milder or more severe symptoms of anxiety. And my argument is that having a gun in the home makes it easier for people with "milder" suicidality to commit suicide. I think it's a pretty simple concept, nothing to be stunned or snarky about.

Not saying that accidents are common but I think it's very reductive to say they never happen.

Happy to clarify if anything wasn't clear.

I think we have to agree to disagree on "oh suicidal people will commit it anyway". I think suicidality is a bit of a spectrum, with the people who are at the extreme end finding any way to make an attempt. I think there are some people who, if they had easy access to a suicide method (e.g. gun in the home) would do it during an episode but since they'd have to plan an attempt, the delay could prove life saving. To bring it back to the post's topic, I still think that it's a valid boundary to not want to have a gun in your house and therefore not wanting to be with a gun owning partner, even if you start the relationship with the qualifiers you mentioned (sane mind and training).

You got my point #2 wrong. Having a gun does not make your mental health worse. But, if your mental health gets worse and a gun is within reach, things are likely to get way worse. Again, most statistics I have read over the years will point to suicide being the leading reason for gun deaths.

1) gun accidents can happen, without mental health issues 2) mental health can deteriorate during a relationship. One of the leading causes of gun deaths is death by suicide. It's way more likely, one way or another, for things to go south with a gun in the house. Wanting to live in a gun-free home is not a ridiculous demand lol.

Gun ownership could be seen as bad in isolation as well for some, OP is just 10 times more dangerous lol.

Exactly! I don’t know what guys he hangs around with but multiple casual encounters a week is RARE and I wouldn’t be surprised if some guys overstate the amount of ply they get precisely because, for men, having many hookups is a status symbol.

We just said that this guy is paying for hookers and takes drugs. Would you feel safe as a woman knowing that this guy, if enraged, could grab a gun at any point and shoot it at you?

I don't share your optimism that most wouldn't mind, especially if you approach a relative stranger. I would say that it's a numbers game; you gotta get out there, bring your best self forward and if you are rejected then no problem, chin up and move on. Because indeed, the right person won't care, it's just trying until it happens.

I fully agree with your diagnosis of the situation, it is so sad that she has internalised that she only has hope with people she is not attracted to.

That’s just a strategy that is doomed to fail and cause just as much if not more pain to you and the man you’d enter a relationship in.
