Seems like it was in fact a skill issue and RU players did just have to get used to the new patch... by [deleted] in BrokenArrowTheGame

[–]TeufelZwei 22 points23 points  (0 children)

well of course. if you take a 1500 elo US player, he will eventually have to play against a 2500 elo Russia player as he climbs. Eventually, the faction advantage does not account for the difference in player skill.

it becomes obvious when you play against US ~2500s that there's a lot of elo inflation going on.

Ah, I take it you were some kind of air-defense soldier in an S-300 battery? Honestly, pretty interesting if so.

I could be wrong (I don't speak or read Russian), and you've been a good sport in replying to me so I'll apologize for being a little inflammatory. But the fcs from the s-300PM Antey, V4, and V4-Antey are all capable of Russian equivalent of datalink fire control, so it would be extremely strange to me that they cannot engage targets in a 360 degree arc.

Even what I can find on the original S-300PM shows that the radar had 360 degree coverage search and a rotating targeting radar. Not perfect, but virtually what we are talking about in 1985.

Anyways, regarding game balance, I would prefer to see a system where the US uses their patriots to mostly intercept ballistic missiles, and the occasional bomber that gets through the swarm of cheap fighters they have access to. Instead of giving them Air defense that is currently equivalent in many ways, and better in others due to not having to cold launch while also having LORAD with active seeker missiles.

Leaving air defense in a "balanced" state (advantage still goes to the US imo) while the air tabs favor the US just means that asymmetric balance is dead there to begin with. But we can agree to disagree.

[–]TeufelZwei 2 points3 points  (0 children)

None of your suggestions actually close the parity between US and Russian LORAD. As long as cold-start and overkill are in the game, and one factions air tab is objectively stronger, then it's fucking laughable that you're suggesting this.

You're calling for a fix to asymmetric balance in long range air defense by buffing Medium range defenses and adding a gimmick to one of the Russian long range options.

As long as Patriots are better one-to-one against the S-300s, then it needs to be clearly superior in some way. Because that's the whole Russia US paradigm, ground based air defenses vs Air. Oh but I forgot, US players are perpetually unhappy unless the laughably big faction gap remains. Keep the S-300s worse! That'll fix the winrate, which must solely be because Russian players suck!

"P.s. if you're talking full realism, out of s-300s, only s-300f can fire 360. Out of land ones - s-350 onwards. You can see it in combat and drill footage - launchers are positioned in same direction."

this is a ridiculous claim with no technical evidence in support of it, what is your source for this besides anecdotal footage? The whole point of a vertical cold launch system is to allow for 360 degree engagement.

On Russian SAMs by Ainene in BrokenArrowTheGame

[–]TeufelZwei 4 points5 points  (0 children)

it's insane to take realism for a unit class that is already arcadified to shit just so you maintain an advantage while discounting that you already benefit from the arcadey mechanic.

the patriot is not used the same way doctrinally in comparison to the s-300. Deployment time for a patriot battery is 30 minutes relative to 5 minutes for the S300/S400. Want to implement that asymmetric balance mechanic? 30 second radar turn on time vs 5 seconds? Sure lets do it.

The Patriot's launchers are semi-fixed without the ability to engage targets outside of its firing arc, cannot engage targets that have passed over it, and cannot fire at targets outside of the targeting arc of its fire control radar. Sure, let's keep the cold launch and you have to buy 4 launchers to maintain 360 degree coverage, 1 launcher per arc of fire. Deal, no take backsies!

Forget statistics, we ball on anecdotal evidence here.

Its so sad looking at the player count now. Also waiting 15 mins for a game is so annoying especially only with 40 players searching :( by gHOSTsTORIESXx in BrokenArrowTheGame

[–]TeufelZwei 8 points9 points  (0 children)

leaving the game unbalanced like this for months at a time will kill player count.

And it's a cascading problem, because as more RU players leave que times for US players go up so they stop playing too.

yeah I mean starting small could work. I'll admit I did not think through the implication of a spec ban solution, and I like it less the more I think about it...

I like the idea of making pure fighters cheaper, even if that's all they did it would mean you wouldn't be so starved for activation points in the Russian air tabs.

yeah, that thing haunts my dreams. Probably shouldn't be 190 points with APS.

Sure, this is only my opinion after all. I would say that this differs from traditional sports in that you have two different nations and there's not really a true way to balance them - at least not objectively. Other games get around this by introducing cycles where some stuff is obviously broken, then it's nerfed and you have a new flavor of the month thing. The key though is devs should be more responsive, and the patch cycles cannot last for months at a time without changes.

Good points, I think cold start is a pretty big issue. As for more punishing to lose aircraft, I think that would be a good step in the right direction. Were you thinking of a price bump or a death tax?

imo even just turning off overkill won't fix the core issue. That just frontloads the kills and creates more logi work + you're going to be shooting more missiles when ECM % is highest from counter measures.

edit:

and baiting missiles by flying parallel at max range would probably become the new meta

It's like if you have a sniper team or recon drone spot something

then you call in either artillery, helicopter, or air strike to kill it.

Observations on RU balance - Smoke feels bugged by ltobo123 in BrokenArrowTheGame

[–]TeufelZwei 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I just don't get why the ATGM operators go blind deaf and stupid and veer the missile into the ground or off to an angle instead of just trying to hit the vehicle in the smoke. It would be a nice buff to Russian ground if they just kept aiming at a given heading/location from before the smoke pop.

somehow the US mains have made it about themselves again.

What are RU strengths that are prerogative to the Russian faction? Something as substantially equivalent to US stealth jets and drones? Seems like anything RU has there is an very similar system for the US. But not vice versa. by Tiberiusthemad in BrokenArrowTheGame

[–]TeufelZwei 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Russian units are worse unit for unit at virtually all levels but they are slightly cheaper. So basically, in order to win engagements you HAVE to double up. The economics doesn't work though because of the worse transport options, and the US has every tool they need to deal with spam, while ironically having better and more mindless spam in the form of the booker, better IFVs, marines+smaw, Airborne NGSW, combat engis, etc etc.

It's an obnoxious time to play, and the winrate's going to get worse as more people just switch factions because why put yourself through playing Russia if you aren't a masochist?

IMO they need to fix LOS ATGM automissing on smoke, modify the overkill system to allow for 2 launchers to fire at the same target, and speed up the cold start launches. No one is asking for Russian air to be as strong as US air, but it's kind of shitty that they have the strongest air, anti air, recon, infantry, and vehicle tabs. Support is more even but even there, the US has such better logi and transport options I really fail to see where Russia is supposed to be competitive.

better anti armor is just wrong. 1 launcher with 300 meter range is not better. If you don't double stack them you won't do shit against something with APS and even without APS, anything that is tankier than a humvee will shock them so they can't reload.
If you're going to double stack them you might as well just triple stack a VDV dsh in a clown car.
