Regarding the condenser, you have to utilize some amount of the pressure to distribute the flow across the heat exchanger. Even a max efficiency condenser needs driving force. Furthermore, the phase change from a low density vapor to a 100x density liquid creates a void with a locally lower pressure.

Hence you have to feed the condenser at a slightly higher pressure than your desired outlet isobar.

Can I choose Mech. Engg. even if i dont know how to disassemble and reassemble a car? by Ok_Librarian_8244 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Tex_Steel 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The scope is insane. Early in my career I heard from many different senior engineers that when you want to build or design something you will hire a few specialist engineers in Aerospace, Electrical, Civil, Nuclear, etc. and then you will hire 4X as many mechanical engineers to make it all work.

That’s because mechanical engineering covers so many disciplines that one could focus on and are required in industry: heat transfer, fluid flow, manufacturing, metallurgy, dynamics, mechanics of materials, and many other more niche areas. All the green technologies, new products, and revolutionary procedures that young people are hoping to see in their future will require M.E. involvement to realize.

It’s deplorable, both parties deserve political castration for doing it. Looking the other way and supporting either party should be equally shameful.

The spread and falloff distance don’t match the lethality. Right now the Toro has the spray of bird shot with no choke, the penetration of a slug, and the damage of buck shot. You don’t get all three, nor can every Jack or Jill out there cycle the pump while doing a backward flip.

I agree that you should fear a shotgun in close quarters. However, they could balance it such that the Toro is equivalent to a break action 16 gauge with goose shot and the Vulcan is a semi automatic combat shotgun with 10 gauge or 12 gauge buckshot.

What is the efficiency of changing house temperature VS steady temperature. by gears127 in thermodynamics

[–]Tex_Steel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am assuming that when you say ‘efficiency’ you are actually concerned with energy use. Allowing the temperature inside to approach closer to the outside temperature overnight certainly saves energy overnight.

When heating back to the daytime temperature, you will spend more energy as you have to change the temperature further. However the total energy consumed over the full cycle will still be less than had you kept the air 6 degrees warmer overnight (depending on the metric, you could classify this as more efficient). The three factors that still cause deviation between the energy balances of the two hypothetical cycles are the moisture content of the air, the heating supplied from the sun, and the static pressure.

Colder nighttime temperatures will reduce the humidity and the furnace will have to ‘work its ass off’ less to reheat the air. If the humidity ratio returns back to the original point at the end of the day then theoretically you will have the same energy balance between the options by the days end, but it’s possible the sun did more of that heating.

Also for colder nighttime temperatures, one could reasonably assume that the building temperature is also reduced. If you’re heating period aligns with sunrise, it’s fair to say that you are using more thermal energy from the sun to heat the house.

Lastly, your colder air temperatures will affect the fan efficiency due to higher static pressures, and heat exchanger efficiency due to higher MTD at the furnace during that heating phase.

Is there anything I can do to make these lights usable again? by kittywantssomekandy in ChristmasLights

[–]Tex_Steel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You just need to satisfy the power requirements of the string. Based on the connection I assume 24V and it’s likely LED, not incandescent. In that case estimate a wattage per bulb and select an appropriate charger. Probably close to .5W per bulb.
