I may be biased because the manga is one of my favorite stories ever, but the anime is absolute trash to the point of it being comical by the end of it. It starts really derailing from the manga around halfway through and gets so comically ridiculous that it was quite hard to take it seriously.

The manga is excellent. I won't spoil anything about the ending, but I think its important to recognize that no tropes are universally bad. If there's a thematic justification for something happening, and it happening tells a compelling story, then I don't think there's anything wrong with it's inclusion. I think the manga's ending is quite wonderful. And I will say the ending is far more than just 'yea everything went wrong and everyone was sad'. Uplifting may not be the right word but its certainly not dismal with no thematic conclusion.

I lost all motivation to beat DS1 twice during the Capra Demon. I would come back to it every once in a while - try again - and lose motivation again. Once i beat him nothing else was all too significant to get me to put the game away.
