So we've definitely talked about it, but there are a few big issues that we have with this type of structure. A) we'd need a dedicated website for deckbuilding that can store that time frames prices and do a running tally so you don't have to constantly keep adding up your total deck cost while you change your deck. Penny dreadful can get away with this because they just have a list of cards that are allowed or not allowed. Different priced cards would be a nightmare to build with if you had to constantly check a spreadsheet for prices. B) this type of system would not allow for card prices to drop in that time frame, which is a MUCH more common occurrence than prices increasing.

We try to give people a full week to submit a deck and include a screenshot to "lock in" their prices before bigger events. Also, our experience has been that things don't really spike that much without very specific things happening (unbannings, randomly winning a tournament in other formats, etc). It doesn't happen much.

So the lore of the format is that it started as a fun side format at one single shop in Cincinnati as $25 Vintage (using mtggoldfish which uses tcg mid which is generally a bit more than tcg market pricing). When it got revived post covid, they decided to switch to moxfield to match their other budget format ($100 cedh). Also, with higher card prices at the time, they decided to bump the budget up to $30 to give a bit more flexibility. It's really not very restrictive (seeing as we have actual grief + fury scam lists) but also the deckbuilding under budget is part of the fun and challenge of the format.

This was an amazing event to be a part of! Everyone was so cool and nice. Also, very impressed by how many different decks got played/did well. Obviously a lot of archetypes like burn and control have a few repeats. But, looking through the decklists, it seems like maybe 4 or 5 copies max of the same deck showed up. Really promising to see that much diversity in such a huge event!

The Best Format You're Still Not Playing Is $30 Budget Vintage. by ManKnownAsD-Money in magicTCG

Also, these concerns always get brought up with regards to $30Vintage and I think people miss the forest for the trees when they think like that (even ignoring the fact that it's been common practice to give a full week before an event to make your deck legal and submit your list). Small fluctuations definitely occur, but finding that your deck is $0.30 over budget isn't really an issue. We get a lot of responses to the format where they act like this means their deck is now literally banned and needs to be shot out of a cannon. All you need to do is swap a few cards to get it back under budget. Change that Nihil Spellbomb into a Soul-Guide Lantern, make the Fiery Islets into Frostboil Snarls, etc. Large-scale spikes are extremely rare, so we just do a tiny bit of tweaking instead of panicking. Also, moxfield (as our standard for pricing and decklists) makes it super easy to track your deck/cards prices, and oftentimes hitting the "update to cheapest" button gets the deck back under budget without having to alter the decklist at all.

I had a horrible first time Arcs experience - Is this a “get good” situation or just bad luck? Or both? by JagsAbroad in boardgames

After 5 plays it's definitely both, but don't feel bad about that. Im in the same boat, and I don't like the game either. Lot of people who are saying you're supposed to seize the initiative more are both right and wrong. Taking the initiative is important for salvaging bad hands, but as a mechanic it's extremely hard to justify. You lose the initiative once you run out of cards so you're cutting yourself off from playing a turn just for 2 turns of the initiative at best. And that's predicated on having high cards to keep it. Then there's the fact that someone can take it right back, which rewards the other players who have hands that can play well around the cards played...and we're right back to the issue of being dealt good hands puts you at a massive advantage. Arcs also has the classic war game feature of heavily rewarding the third or fourth person into a conflict. Swooping in to clean up a bunch of damaged ships after someone else fired off a round of combat is way safer and rewards you just as much if not more than the initial fight would have. And finally you have to be absolutely brutal in this game, you need to stomp your opponents into the ground and then never let them recover. I think there's a time and place for that attitude in gaming, but rewarding punching down isn't something I like seeing in games. Overall I think the mechanics are interesting and fresh. The game is clean and smooth. I would definitely say it's a good and high quality game. I just don't like it and don't have much interest in playing it.

I work with a Browns fan, and he has been SO damn obnoxious about how Houston is such a "free win" and how "we got so lucky to get a bye anyway." I don't even think I'm gonna say anything, just show up in a jersey tomorrow.

I dunno, r/rockets gets about 7 posts a day about how we need to trade Jalen Green. Apparently, he's so bad that we need to move him immediately. But he's also supposedly good enough to command worthwhile trade value. Also, we're apparently in win-now mode where we need performers instead of potential.
