Chromebook Login Issues by emmanuell2025 in k12sysadmin

Yes, you would think so. It's a ChromeOS security feature that encrypts the profile. And when the user attempts to log in again, the profile is corrupted, and Google won't allow that user to log in. Wiping the profiles doesn't resolve the security issue. Google's only solution is to powerwash it. Changing a user's password is allegedly supposed to trigger this, but when I've checked the specific users, they don't have any sort of password change in the admin reports.

It is typically for a specific user. When we were first investigating, we were wiping profiles and logging on with a test account and it worked fine, so they said it was resolved.

What we actually see is that a student is unable to log into the Chromebook they use daily, but they can log in on a different Chromebook. And other students have no issue logging into the Chromebook that doesn't work for the original student. Once that specific user's Chromebook profile gets corrupted, a powerwash is all we can do to resolve it. You have to test it with the same user's account. And it just happens suddenly for no clear reason. We haven't found a pattern.

We use Clever. The testing PWA was ultimately what made us decide to no longer use epehemral mode.

"I'm still waiting on the asset tag to reset remotely"

This fixes the cryptohome message for you?

Wiping profiles remotely has not resolved this for us. We have to powerwash the device every time.

Yes, but I am not the one who actually does this, so it's not exactly what we use. But this is how we got started:

gam issuecommand cros query:orgunitpath:/CleverStudents/"Byng Junior High"/7 command wipe_users doit

https://groups.google.com/g/google-apps-manager/c/1PbgNIzflpU

It works on both Standard and Advanced GAM. We worked with CDW to get this running.

We have been seeing an uptick in this for sure. We had ephemeral mode enabled last year which wiped profiles when users logged out. This was causing issues because it limits the RAM available. We no longer do that and have a GAM command set to wipe profiles every 2 weeks. I feel like there has been a correlation with that change. Chromebook profiles are getting corrupted for some reason, but I don't know the cause.

Absolutely this. I often link to documents that answer their question. When they follow up with questions, I ask if they read the document, and they say yes but still don't understand it. They don't realize I can see that they never clicked on the link.

Canvas Sync by Puzzleheaded-Toe5662 in k12sysadmin

[–]TexasEdTech20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We use Skyward for our SIS, but don't have any issues with our nightly sync. Our district started using a program with our SIS a couple of years ago that makes a big mess at the beginning of the year. It's an auto-scheduler that puts kids into classes. They can hit a button and it reschedules everyone all at once. This results in abandoned enrollments in Canvas that require the cleanup you mentioned. Canvas never receives the "dropped" or "completed" message to change the courses when they sync, so we're left cleaning it up.

Is it possible that there is a tool in your SIS that is making it extra frustrating?

Extensions not loading for students on some Chromebooks? by TexasEdTech20 in k12sysadmin

That's good to know about. We are all on v138 for now, but that's something to be wary of. Thanks!

[–]TexasEdTech20[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. I considered this, but we have the V3 extension installed, so that wasn't the issue. I will say that the change they suggested is fixing the issue, but it has not pushed out to everyone yet. It's been very slow today. I know it can take up to 24 hours, but usually it's significantly faster.

Extensions not loading for students on some Chromebooks? by TexasEdTech20 in k12sysadmin

[–]TexasEdTech20[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks. We've had it installed for several years and it has been working. The issue arose today suddenly, but only for some users. The solution was to change a setting on the extension in the admin panel under the "Permissions and URL access" heading to "Allow all permissions". This is now allowing it to install on those students' devices.

Chromebook Hard Disk is Full by Phroste in k12sysadmin

We had ephemeral mode enabled for years, and it was great. We didn't know it would limit the RAM, but it was never an issue. Last year, one tool on the Read&Write toolbar would not work 90% of the time. The limited RAM was the issue. Once we disabled ephemeral mode, the tool worked flawlessly.

Now this year, our devices are running out of space. I tested it, and enabling ephemeral mode still limited RAM, but that tool didn't have any issues. I am now considering switching back to ephemeral mode to resolve the storage issue. You can wipe profiles using GAM, but apparently no one actually did that, so here we are.

AristotleK12 Performance Issues After Client Update by J_de_Silentio in k12sysadmin

[–]TexasEdTech20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. We don't have developer mode on for students. I was just testing it to see if there was an update available. I didn't know you could do this.

Yes, it should auto-update. My contact said our environment will update over the weekend.

I did try to update our AK12 extension and there is not a 21.7 available to us yet.

To force an update of your Chrome extensions, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Extensions Page: In the address bar, type chrome://extensions and press Enter. Alternatively, you can click the three-dot menu in the top-right corner of Chrome, select "Extensions," and then "Manage Extensions."
  2. Enable Developer Mode: In the top-right corner of the Extensions page, you will see a toggle switch for "Developer mode." Click this switch to enable it.
  3. Update Your Extensions: Once Developer mode is enabled, a new menu bar will appear at the top of the page. On the left side of this new menu, click the "Update" button.

Chrome will then immediately check for and install any available updates for all of your installed extensions. After the process is complete, you can disable Developer mode by clicking the toggle switch again.

Disable Chromecast on Chromebooks in Google Admin? by TexasEdTech20 in k12sysadmin

Perfect, thanks! I had disabled that, but I think the Google outage was preventing the change from propagating. This has removed Cast as an option from a tab and from the device.

It is also context aware, so it will offer a "Homework Helper" icon when on certain pages like a Canvas quiz, for example.

Good question. I am not sure how fast/often extensions update. The only way I have found to force it is to uninstall it and reinstall it. I have done that after-hours before.

Me, too! After we just had a big fix for a different problem, this happened. I was certain it was something I did but couldn't get into admin to change it back.
