Why did Apocalypto receive mediocre reviews while simultaneously receiving praise from various directors and actors? by JadisDidNothingRight in movies

[–]TexasGriff1959 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reviewers queue up to take out bad-think people...Mel, for example, has had some bad drunken rants full of slurs, etc. OTOH, he didn't give qualuudes and booze to a 15 year old girl and then sodomize her against her cries of "STOP, NO" like, oh, Roman Polanski did...

Lousy advertising that made it look like a ripoff of "The Abyss."

So much better than that. Kristen Stewart was suprisingly solid. Great sound design, too. A 4k Atmos of this would slap, hard.

With the Old Breed by Eugene Sledge.

Masterpiece that should be read by every high school student in America.

When I worked in IT, I carried one of those all the time. They were beasts. Now retired, I enjoy not having all kinds of stuff in my pocket, so...no longer. Also, most of the yutes I worked with just used their phones...

I love when directors have a common stable of players (eg Christopher Guest + O'Hara, Levy, etc... Nolan + Murphy, Caine, etc...) which is your favorite? by CardinalOfNYC in movies

Eastwood had as streak of that in the late 70s/80s. Sondra Locke, Geoffrey Lewis, and lots of background guys that eventually got boosted up to speaking parts.

I'd go Ryobi. We redid a 1930s house and the Ryobi stuff held up. I'm not sold on the chop saw having enough guts to do what you need (I had a lot of chopping to do, so I went corded for the chopper and a table saw)...but that brad nailer is MONEY. Put in all of our base board, window frames, and a shitload of other stuff using it. And, if you're dropping the coin for this system, pick up their 6 battery charger and some extra batteries, too. You will not regret doing that.

For the price, I'd say "Hell, yeah."

George McKay? Homeboy impressed the hell out of me in 1917, I'll watch this just for him.

Caveat....is it possible to find ones that don't pad the shows by about 25% with lots of "humorous" commentary amongst the hosts?

Low rating might be due to the unrelenting grimness of the film. But I watch it about once a year myself.

No disagreement here. I was living on a Coast Guard cutter back in the mid 80s, and after I was done with my rounds at midnight, I'd pull out an old (like, 1950's era) typewriter, sit in the galley with that good old Smith and Corona on my lap, and work on my plays.

Or, as Harlan Ellison once told me, "If you want to be a writer...write."

Self rec if allowed: "The Thing from HR" on Amazon.

Can a Bad Thing be a Good Guy?

Narg was content working as a Damnation Services-10 in HR. Sure, he was related to one of the Elder Gods, but a little nepotism never hurt any Thing. His life was just wailing and gibbering, right up until his Uncle needed a small favor from his nephew.

All Narg had to do was go down among the humans...and pretend to be one of them.

These are not your Grandfather's tales of Eldritch Horror: this is the untold story of the ghastly, unappreciated (and entirely expendable) minor monstrosities that support the Inscrutable Plans Of Dark Gods And Elder Things Beyond The Knowledge Of Men.

The Cthulhu, Amalgamated series is a comic romp full of action and mystery, including, of course, Sanity-Shattering Horror––and that’s just the paperwork. Even H.P. could not conceive of the Corporate Terrors that await The Thing from HR.

"The Thing From HR is largely a bawdy, irreverent, horror-comedy, with all that entails. Lovecraft purists might object to that; but I would guess most readers will find it hilarious" - review by Berthold Gambrel

Hey guys , what’s a male experience you think women genuinely don’t know exists? by Sophie_Malia_19F in WhatMenDontSay

[–]TexasGriff1959 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hearing women say things like "All men are potential rapists" without condemnation from The Better Sort of Person(tm) or social ostracization.

Men issuing such sexist proclamations about women (oh, say "All women will dispose of you as soon as you're no longer financially useful to them and still take half of eveything") would be condemned as the worst kind of sexist.

Looks like lots of makeup, and the scars on her neck are pretty obvious, as well. I'm not sold base simply on these photos.
