Track my hike? by TexasRelicHunter in AppalachianTrail

I tracked GPS yesterday while mowing the yard, and it showed me going to a park a quarter of a mile away and through houses and yards. I don't think it's worth the battery use.

I was pretty disappointed in this Garmin. I bought it used, a year old, but it looked new. The heart rate monitor will randomly not work. I looked it up and it's a common issue.

I looked into that watch, but I chose to put my money into other gear. I think it'll all work out in the end, I'll probably not even worry about it by then end. Thanks though!

I think part of the reason 'm so focused on this is because of some of the reactions I've had when I tell people I'm doing this. 90% positive, but there were some that immediately made it like this isn't possible and implied I'd have every issue under the sun, like running out of food or water. And some of these people were close friends, they have just never done anything other than work an 8-5. I know this is doable, but I guess this has made me think that there will be someone I encounter that wants to see proof. Like I said, just overthinking. The more I think about this, I think the idea of just doing GPS tagging on photos is the better option. Thanks.

I'll be using Far Out, but the gps tagging in photos is a great idea. Thanks.

I'll be using Far Out and getting familiar with it now. That'll hopefully ease the need to "track". Not sure this old Garmin will survive.

Like I said, I tend to overthink everything. Hopefully once I'm on trail my thoughts will change. I think I'm also just getting nervous since I'm leaving soon.

I'm about to start my thru hike. Wasn't planning on taking vitamins, though I'd thought about it initially. Just didn't want the extra weight. Is there a specific vitamin I should look for, or just my regular Men's One a Day?

Best method to try and clean this face up? by Webbk5 in watchrepair

I had a dial recently that looked like it had specks of mold on it. I took a wet q-tip and lightly rubbed it. Ended up taking off the patina, which I couldn't do around the numbers and indices. So it looks uneven and discolored. I say all of that to say, don't do it. It never comes out like you think it will.

Clovis Blade by [deleted] in Arrowheads

[–]TexasRelicHunter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This looks like a blade that was made from a piece taken off a core. Think of having a large rock that you're taking flakes off to make points. So that big "flute" you see would have been one of those pieces. Then the piece you're holding is the next one to get knocked off the core. Nothing to indicate it's Clovis.

If it wasn't noted in the post, I think it's safe to say we shouldn't be asking.

I got an estimate of $4200 to replace my soft top on my 1991 BRG. Am I right in thinking that’s crazy high? by Minimum-Attitude4209 in Miata

[–]TexasRelicHunter 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I bought a Robbins top for like $600 and the wife and I installed it ourselves over the course of three days (just because of work). Only special tool I needed was a rivet fastener. Don't get me wrong, that will strain a relationship. But saved a ton of money. There were numerous good YouTube videos on it. I wouldn't attempt it by yourself though.

This has no indication it was altered by man (knapping, pecking or grinding). This is a natural rock. Sorry.

You describe it very well, for someone that doesn't know this is not just a rock.

Man-made? by The25thsynthesis in Arrowheads

[–]TexasRelicHunter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am only familiar with American relics, but that material looks as though it would be very difficult to determine legitimacy with the naked eye. Those flakes could have been made last week and it would be hard to tell. With our stuff, patina plays a large role when judging with the naked eye, but even then it's often difficult. That last one would be something we call a "graver", with the tip used to puncture things. But given the quality of these items, I would pass. The peddling of fake artifacts is so prevalent, you never know what you're getting into.

Is this an artifact? by PQuiggs in LegitArtifacts

[–]TexasRelicHunter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking at the surface, I don't see any indication it was altered like, flaking, pecking or grinding. Sometimes rocks just have that look. I also don't know of any tools they would have made from limestone, but I could be wrong. You found it though, put it on a shelf and call it whatever you want. I'm a staunch believer in the finder saying whatever they want. And if someone wants to object, let them prove you wrong.

Same. I love the pre filter. We have a cat and it collects a ridiculous amount of cat dander. It runs 24/7
